Would it be worth picking up a 21" NOS CRT?

I know most classic games I've seen have 19" crt's....

Maybe as a back to stuff into a cab when a 19" goes poof?

Really odd size. Are you sure it's not an old black and white vectpr monitor? That's the only ones I've seem in that size for some late 70's games.

Is it possible the seller is measuring it wrong. It would be really tough to put it in place of a 19 inch. I saw a 20 inch tube someone put in a Balsteroids and the cab and bezel were pretty hacked up, pretty much ruined the cab.

Oh that deal. Laughs.

You will have fun learning how to repair that odd monitor board set..

Can you make these board stable enough to pass the warrantee period?

They use to have 19" CRT also..

I am sure if one could build a better monitor pcb that based upon reliability.

Whoops....scratch that...they both were 20" monitors I was thinking of, not 21. My bad lol. I remembered it was a rare size.
My standard upright afterburner has a 19, I couldn't see a 20 inch screen fitting it. I actually had another one and also had a 19 incher. But I do remember the cockpit having an odd size screen. I passed one up because it had a toasted monitor and I didn't want to spend 10 years looking for one.

Yeah, the neck of the tube would stick out the back of a regular 19" upright I would imagine...

Manual states on both deluxe and upright as 20" monitors. And my AB had a 20 in it.

I've never seen one with an original monitor. Mine has a k7000 19 and it fits perfect. Since the 20 inch tubes have a much flatter contour to the screen and this 19 fits perfect, is it possible that Sega's 20 is actually a 19 inch, kind of like Nintendo's 20 inch actually being a 19.

Ok, read up on this. Original monitor in an AB is a Hantrex mtc-90. While I can't find a manual for that screen there are several write ups about people swapping the mtc-90 out for a Hantrex mtc-900 because it's a direct fit swap. Mtc-900 manual says it's a 19 inch color raster monitor.

Could be. I remember measuring mine and it was a 20 definetly.

In regards to the upright, I'm thinking that was a mistake. After seeing what had to be done to that Blasteroids to shoe horn a 20 inch tube where a 19 was and seeing how perfectly the 19 fits in the upright AB, I'm sure the bezel would have to be significantly different to house the 20 inch tube. The Blasteroids had wood cut out for the frame and the bezel was all cut up, I tried to put a 19 back in its place, the cab was to hacked up, it wasn't happening. The AB bezel lines up perfectly with the masking on my 19 inch tube, a 20 inch tube would would be quite a bit outside of the bezel and with the contour of the 20 inch tube being nearly flat, there would be huge gaps at the top and bottom of the bezel. Both upright AB'S I've owned came to me with K7000 19's that fit perfectly, I still have the bezel off of the other one, neither of mine look to be modded in any way. A mistake by Sega wouldn't surprise me after how bad they screwed up the free play mode on AB.

Here in the states we measure tubes diagonally but only the actual glass tube part.
Other places like Japan measure the same monitor but include the metal banding around the monitor and part of the mouthing brackets so then it become a 20" monitor.

That makes sense because I just couldn't see what I know as a 20 inch tv tube fitting in the AB. Thanks for clearing it up. Pretty much what I figured just like the Sanyo 20ez being a 19 inch tube in our USA reality.
