Ok, so my spyhunter seems to be resetting itself, and freezing up. My first guess after reading some other threads is that it may be a power supply issue. So, how do I messure the voltage on the linear power supply without killing myself? and if the power is too low or too high how do I go about adjusting it..also without killing myself.

I also noticed that Bob roberts sells power supply rebuild kits. When would it be time to put one of these in? Are these things as simple as de-solder/re-solder or is it a bit more involved and something someone new may not want to mess with by himself.

I know its a noob question and I appologize. I would just prefer not to fry anything (myself included) today. Thanks!

Can you take a picture of your power supply and post it on here?

Here are a couple.. I included one of the transformer as well..

If you are unable to adjust your MCR Power Supply, and do not feel comfortable or able to rebuild it, you can always change it out to a switcher P/S with the arcadeshop adapter. I had three MCR P/S out of other games that could not bring up the power high enough for my Spy Hunter, but worked fine in the other games. The Spy Hunter would keep resetting itself with any of the installed MCR P/S. I got frustrated and installed the switching P/S with the adapter. It worked fine as soon as I powered it out.

Note: I did have to install a 4700u, 25V capacitor between the 12V and Ground connectors on the switcher/adapter to eliminate the loud speaker hum everyone complains about when they put a switcher in a Spy Hunter.

Hope this helps, or at least, gives you another option.

If you have low power after you rebuild the power supply, you're probably looking at problems with the big blue caps in the suitcase on the bottom of the game.

As for shocking yourself, when you're in the cabinet, the only thing that can hurt you is the ac power in the cab. So be careful with the main power plug, and the wiring running to the monitor and the power switches. Also of course be careful around the monitor, lots of zappage there.

If you look on the game pcb, you'll see capacitors around the edge of the board. Find one of those, and check the voltage from one side of the cap to the other. It'll probably be around 4.6 or so if you're having reset issues... you can turn the voltage up by turning one of the knobs on the power supply (can't remember which one it is, turn it slightly and see if the voltage moves while you're measuring it) you want to have 5 volts on the board, or pretty damn close to it.

Thanks. I'm just tring to find out where the knob is on the power supply board to tuen it up.

found which one is the +5. Can I turn this up while the game is running or should it be off? Also is it ok to use a small screw driver to do this or do I need some special tool I dont know about?

You can do it while the game is on, just make sure to use your multimeter and turn it slowly. You can also use a regular screwdriver as long as you are careful.

You need to take a measurement of the +5 before adjusting it. It may be set ok and if you just turn it up without verifying you will damage the boards.

maxed the +5 out at about 3.4 or 3.5 ...Seems to be running though which is odd, because I figured that would be WAY too low.. Im going to let it sit off for a bit to cool down then power it up and see if it stays running...Ill post to how it goes

hmmm no go...game boots up and comes up with garbage..the game comes up after it warms up for a while but it keeps resetting...Time to rebuild the power supply?
