I've been really lucky with the machines I've acquired over the years - no real monitor problems, save for the occasional mild burn-in. This is my first puzzler, and have zero experience troubleshooting a monitor. I came across a WG 27D9204. I can't get it to work in CGA or EGA mode (yes I swapped the harness on the input board per the schematic), but I can get it to display somewhat of a picture in VGA mode. The problem is the top part of the screen is crazy. I tried adjusting it via the menu on the satellite board, but no dice. I can't find any burnt traces or components, and all the solder joints look solid. My first guess would be it needs to be recapped, so any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, the first thing to do is a Factory Reset to see if that helps. A lot of times the internal memory of the D9200 gets corrupted and it starts doing funky things with the display. Typically this results in only one of the tri-sync modes working while the others don't.

To do this, get a semi-stable image on the screen that allows you to access the menu. With the menu NOT showing on the screen, access the Factory Menu by holding down DOWN and SEL at the same time. Select the RE to do a Memory Recall. When you've finished the Recall, readjust the brightness or color gains, picture size, etc if necessary. Exit to the regular menu and do the same.

Now, check to see if everything looks okay in the different modes. If not, you may have to do that cap kit after all. Good luck! There are about 84 caps...

That's an easy one.

Replace caps C310, C308, C306 and C314. This should solve
your messed up screen, but given the history of this monitor
you should do a complete cap kit. Also reflow solder around the
flyback pins, yoke connector and coils. Also check and reflow
solder on pins of the 2 big IC's, they tend to get cracks.

When you try to operate the monitor at CGA/EGA do you get any picture at all? Does it say "no signal?"

I've seen the bad input boards cause that.

+1 on changing the caps to fix the monitor issue you have.

Thanks for all the help! I'm trying to track down a source for a cap kit - Bob Roberts doesn't handle this model, and I've sent an email to Zanen, and waiting for a reply.

@gamefixer - yep. That's exactly what happens.

You can order one directly from WG for about $10, but I don't think it is a FULL cap kit - only comes with about 50-75% of the caps you need - but you'd have to ask.

Or if you want to order them individually from Mouser or Digikey, I have the complete list posted around here somewhere...

Thanks for all the advice. Good thing I've got an industrial soldering station at work! I just got a reply from Zanen saying they don't stock that kit. Hmmmmm..... Well, my employer has a corporate account with Digikey, so I might go that route. Thanks again for the help!

There were like 6 or 7 left over but I think those could have been for different variations of the 9200. I tried finding them on the board and every cap was replaced except for c402

Here is a picture of the used caps after Slackmoe capped my monitor. HUGE thanks to him also for the help. The kit from Zanen was 69 caps + I grabbed 3 other caps that were not included from a different cap kit. So it was like 72 total .

EDIT: It had been about a month and a half since I called Zanen about this kit. I figured "what the hell" and gave `em a buzz. Sure enough, they have them, and in stock. $9.99 + shipping... guy said the kit has over 60 caps...

PRE-UPDATE POST: Where can I get that D9200 cap kit? I tried Zanen and they said no... Bobs kit worked in getting me up and running, but I still have a "wave" that runs through the screen. Bobs kit came with like 10 caps total... same with the WG kit. Bob will sell a kit but you have to ask for it and like I said, it's majorly incomplete. I'd like to replace ALL the caps, but I can't find a kit.

Holy crap... I got Zanen's kit in the mail Saturday. It's kit #260 and it comes with 69 (yes, SIXTY NINE) caps... $9.95 + shipping... can't beat that deal with a stick.

Good deal. Let us know which caps they didn't include, since my own list has 76.

Actually if you can scan they're sheet and e-mail it to me, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to compare it to my own list...
