Non-cpu based "Played x times" reporting -- Examples?

With "modern" boxes, it's easy to get info on track popularity just by going into the software. Even with a CD or late vinyl juke I would imagine that it would not be terribly difficult to get this info. But are there any older jukes, say TTL-based or electromechanical (or a series or brand) that can track popularity of a song? I do remember at some point seeing a late 70's rock-ola where you could play the most popular song, but has anyone seen a system that will keep track of popularity of all songs? It seems like a long shot, and really I'm just curious for the sake of curiosity. Thanks, guys!

Hello,

As Ken says Pop Meters have been around for a long time certainly from the mid 50's for Rowe Ami and Seeburg, Rowe had a system that pushed pins out on the pop meter for every record played, Seeburg had a system that pushed wheels/discs round that was above the tormat. Both systems allowed for around 30 stepped plays.

It was the collectors job to see what record had not been played, so in the case of the Rowe boxes any pins not pushed out or only a few plays recorded would be changed.

In 1938 Mills Novelty Company introduced a factory installed record counting system where each record would be counted. 52 plays per record max. count. Totals would be reset by the operator during service. This counter was used by the operator to determine the popularity of each record. The system was available to owners of earlier jukeboxes and could be installed in the field using only a standard screwdriver.
Interestingly, I own and have fully restored a 1936 Mills Do RE MI Jukebox and one of the features it has from the factory is a mechanical timer, rewound with each record play.If on, it will trigger an "attract mode" and give 1 free play every 15,30,45,or 60 Minutes as determined by operator setting.

My old NSM Prestige has a multi colored bar located behind the rack of records with small white tabs that ratchet upwards with each records play. (It looks like a little cityscape) Not exactly made for the customers to see or use, more for the operators to gauge (and remove) dud songs.
