No talk of the new Magic Girl ?

I had heard about it and just have been to busy to post about it. It is going to be interesting and John has some really good ideas that he is going to put into this that no one has ever seen.

It is interesting, and I'm glad that JP is doing this, but let's face it: 99.9% of us won't have one so there isn't going to be a ton of excitement or discussion.

You need to go to rec.games.pinball. People are already trying to buy the pre-sold games at extra cost.

I think 5 grand is my "hobby limit". I have never yet spent even 1/4 that amount acquiring a game, but I also can't see spending more than that on a single machine. I just consider the stuff thats above that price to be too extravagant.

The funny thing is that I have more than that saved, I just don't think they're worth it. I'd rather put the money toward a new truck or something.

Yeah, I've been following all of the threads at rgp. I agree with your comments.

Yeah, that's a pretty insane price considering there's nothing more than an outline and a promise. Some will say "well, look at Gene with Big Bang Bar....or Jersey Jack with Wizard of Oz...those who paid and had faith were rewarded." (Granted, Oz isn't finished yet...but there are no doubts that it will be)

Here are the differences...

-Big Bang Bar...it was DONE. Design, programming, art, animation, sound...everything...done. No doubt it was an accomplishment to build them...but to put it simply, they were cloning something that existed already.

-Jersey Jack: Has a pretty sizable crew of industry vets, and experience in building coin-op machines.

Now...no doubt Jpop is a great designer...but - is he doing this whole thing by himself? Is he going to pay a small crew to help? It seems absolutely daunting for one guy to pull this off. Now - if he does in fact pull this off....it'll be a little sad that only 13 people will be enjoying it.

Maybe there's a larger plan here. Here's a theory...he's got the faith and "investment" of these 13 people to cover all the development costs....and he'll be able to then mass produce the game cheaper for the masses without factoring development into the price. Jpop has often mentioned on RGP that pinball machines are just too expensive....so, who knows...maybe he's got some master plan here.

To me this is the main issue. Who the hell is actually going to be helping him build these pins? There are lots of unanswered questions with this one, much more than with BBB or WoZ.

Or maybe like was also posted, he's just taking the money from people for a "Rich elitist asshole pin"...

I agree with that sentiment. Only 13 pins, and at that price, it's obnoxious and a slap in the face to 99% of the collector community.

Nothing like good ol class envy/warfare.

I talk to John almost every day. He has a passion for this game like nothing I have ever seen. I think he will be able to pull it off. I DON'T think he will make any money on this project. I just can't see it happening with a 13 machine run.

I do think it will be cool.
I seriously considered buying one, but did not.

John has a track record of some very good game designs. He does alot of the art himself too. The production, well, that remains to be seen, but he's a long standing guy in the industry, so if anyone has resources, it would be him. He has told me you can design a great game, but without a great programmer, you have nothing. I am sure he is getting a great programmer for this endeavour.

In just talking to him you can tell his excitement for the game and the project. It's a shame he has not been able to hook up with Stern or JJP. Maybe in the future, but I think going out on his own will unleash creativity that is needed in this market.

It is definately up there in the price though. If he can keep making games, and have them be proven, and come to a price alot more can afford he just might have something here.

The fact that all 13 are already pre-sold is a good thing for him, and does show people are willing to pay for something they think will be great.

Chris

Yeah, you don't undertake something like this, only sell 13 of them, and NOT have a passion for it. I think it's great and I can't wait to see how it turns out.
