Hi, I have a No Fear pin by Williams. I'm just asking a maintenance question here which is, the skull's mouth on mine will sometimes not open and close but the motor will still go(I still here it), however it does work sometimes but more often then not the skull stays closed. Is there any way to fix this or is just the way the machines are now?

after shopped my no fear

The skull is driven by small coil , open up skull disassamble coil clean any rust on crud

off with fine coarse steel wool . then light coat plunger with machine oil and wipe off ,

re- assemable skull will talk just fine

Unless there's something different about the coil plunger in question, I'd never suggest oiling one. To quote pinrepair (source):
1e. Getting Started: Lubrication Notes
Pinball machines, for the most part, do not require any lubrication. Most parts run "dry". Far more damage can be done to a pinball machine by over-lubricating, than by under-lubricating. As a rule, if in doubt as to lubrication, don't do it! Throw that WD-40 away, it won't be used here.
The only parts that will require any lubrication are metal-to-metal moving parts. There aren't very many in a game. Only ball eject and slingshot hinges. 3-in-1 oil also works on these if needed. But try and keep that lubrication in the tool box and away from the game.

If some prior person did lubricate the game, the lubrication has probably now congealed with the infamous "black pinball dust" to form a thick, black mess. This is unrepairable on coil sleeves, and new parts will need to be installed.

You should be able to put the skull in test mode, or cycle all the coils in a test mode to seee how often or not it works correctly. Sounds like it is working, just not consist of course, so that is a good sign.

If coil driven, then possibly you need a coil. I am sure there is a switch for it too and that could be dirty, or need to be replaced. If the machine was in an arcade, it could have loads of plays on it, not a bad thing, but things will wear out of course.

In addition to what Kicky states...

"If I am not mistaken this particular coil has a plastic sleave that is
integrated into the coil. The whole inside the coil is the same but on
the bottom of the coil there used to be a plastic ring that was much
smaller than the whole in the coil to help guide the plunger that
pushes on skull's jaw. On the old coil as the new it was all
integrated into one piece. This is the part I bought
pbl_SM-30-1100_coil Williams/Bally SM-30-1100 Coil. "

Hey I'm trying to find other "no fear" owners , I got some kind of crazy volume issue

with mine ! I crank it to 23 or 34 . My twilight zone will blow you away on 11 or 12 .

I already changed speakers and both tda amps as well as tlo84's still no change . A

muffeled bass sound and not much treble in voice . would like suggestions

Thanks

LOL kicky! I just amped my Corvette and put in a larger woofer in it. It now rocks like a real Vette and shakes the glass!

For the NF lack of volume, have you tried the Google forum, RPG? Rec. Pinball Games.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.pinball/topics

That place has helped me a lot with my games, sadly it has turned into a flame and political fourm lately, so I had to take a break from it. However there are and is, still a lot of help and people on it, that ignore all the BS and will help.
