i have a 6100 that i had working....not very good pic though(distorted but might have been Tempest pot adj also). never left running more than a min or two but was fine. i replaced a few things to get it in better shape but got worse of course! just trying to figure out if it could have been something i did to crack the flyback???

on the deflection pcb i installed the lv6100(Spaeth's), replaced the 2 big 4700 caps next to them, rectifier diodes next to them, fuses next to them as the lv2000 instructions tell you to. checked voltages (got +/-23v) at the pins suggested without anything plugged in, and yes, just like the instructions say, the deguassing resistor smoked. also, replaced the 6 transistors on frame and checked for direct shorts before plugging in! reflowed all trans. pins on deflection pcb also.

turned on and was up but looked like it needed severe deguassing. almost like vertical lines(vert mounted) of the colors kinda seperated. thought, even though direction say that that resistor smoking doesn't hurt anything....but you know where i was going until i heard a pop and no HV!

lv6100 leds were dim now and spot killer is off still but no HV. took off cage and these pics is what i see...looks like flyback popped and burnt up plenty others!

i never touched the cage prior...could i have installed anything incorrectly to cause this? i wouldn't think so since in LV/deflection section.

can this be salvagable now? if so, any help on why and how this happened?

thanks!

i dont think you did that damage
that would have been alot of smoke
i believe it was there before.

did you ever look at the hv board before with the cage off.

did you do a full cap kit?

i just aquired game awhile back but just getting to it now. i never even took off cage or looked at HV cause it worked when i powered it up 1st time. probably was there before but now it sure looks like a bad flyback with guts kinda hangin out! surely that just happened???

no i did not do a full capkit...just replaced the 2 big ones on deflection pcb. i have a full kit from Bob Roberts but wanted to do in stages(ie. deflection pcb/chassis transistors), seperately to see progress!

also, i have 2 delfection pcbs that have an Atari pcb(approx 1.5x4 in) atop pcb itself with a couple caps on it, and not a pretty mod(i guess it's a mod) if you ask me....what is that pcb used for?

thanks!

If it were mine...I'd rebuild it and use it.

I would pull out the schematics and the parts layout diagram (their in the manual) and figure out what you have and what goes where. When I say what goes where I mean electricaly more so than physically. As some of the board and traces are destroyed you have to rebuild the paths with some wire, by leaving components legs long to reach the next "hop", or even by using cut off legs to make the jumps. Just watch that you do not short components or leave them touching exposed traces that may short to some place you don't want.

In reality...that space is not all that densely populated so it probably sounds worse than it is. Try and clean off some of the scorching to see what's left as a guide.

Parts wise I don't recall anything that difficult to source. I went through a couple last year that were in various states of damage and disrepair from being raided and from having the fly erupt like yours. I, more or less, ordered almost everything in the HV can (save for the super odd stuff like the little transformer) and replaced anything that even looked bad.

Arcade Shop has a replacement fly. Word of caution. The 2 I have used did not have correct spacing for the wires to the focus assembly. I had to file one of the holes in the side of the can a bit to make sure I did not get a short.
