Nintendo Vs. with black blinking screen = dead PPU?

Is that correct? I'm not very familiar with these. I've got a working board that had a Vs. Gradius daughterboard in it but when I put in Super Mario I get a blank black screen that blinks (rolls with each blink). I can post pics and video if necessary.

the problem is possibly that the daughter card bent the socket pins out so bad that the Mario PPU is not making a good connection.

that happens allot when changing daughter card boards and non daughter card boards.

try and replace the socket to see if it clears up your issue.

Peace

Super mario requires 2 cpu's. You need to have both populated unless you have a game on the other side if the board. That could be the issue.

Thank you for the input!

Everything seems to be fitting pretty tight but I'm assuming that just because the whole chip seems to fit tight doesn't mean that one of the legs isn't making good contact.

I bought the Super Mario chips as working so it would seem odd (although not impossible) that the chips are dead.

I have 2 CPUs. I tried populating the CPU just on the left side only (on the opposite side from where the other chips go) like it says on the instructions and there was no change. I've tried swapping the 2 CPUs too. I even tried the jumper wire trick.

The most change I've gotten from messing with the chips is to go from a washed out-black blinking screen to a washed out greenish black blinking screen. Haha.

Anybody know a good place to get machine pin sockets?

I put Gradius back in and even that, with it's gi-hugh-ed construction grade legs took a lot of fiddling to get working again. So, I'm pretty sure its the sockets. I got a similar blinking screen when it wasn't seated exactly right.

The cheapest route would seem to either re-socket the board or to get machine pin style adaptor sockets with extra heavy duty legs. Anybody know where to get something like this? I checked Bob Roberts but couldn't find em.

Just something to think about, if you use machine pin sockets boards like vs. gradius probably won't fit.

I'm leaning toward getting a totally different board for Super Mario. Something that hasn't been worn out by kit games.

Well, I think I learned two things today

First, my Super Mario chip set came with two RP2A04 chips and I belive I need an RP2A03 for the right side of the board because RP2A04 is a "dummy" chip.

Second, I tried to swap out the RP2A03 from Gradius, but that didn't work for some reason, and then, in a final move of desperation, I put the chip in backwards, and that was stupid because I think that frys the chip (an probably the board and who knows what else).

Join me next week when I newb out and do something else stupid.

Dear Nintnedo Vs., by Jameson B. Urglar

Dear Nintendo Vs., you really fucking stink
I'd like to fucking play you, but all you do is blink
Dear Nintendo Vs., just between me and you
I should just burn my money instead of buying CPUs
Dear Nintendo Vs. to tell the fucking truth,
I'm about go Todd Tuckey on your ass, and throw you off the roof
Dummy CPUs and real ones, PCBs, PPUs and ROMs
I want to smash them all and go cry to my mom
Dear Nintendo Vs., why do you hate me so?
Is it because I suck? No, it's because you fucking blow.

I (and when I say "I", I really mean "DJ DNS") figured this out.

First, the blinking screen means bad CPU, not bad PPU.

Second, the CPUs from Mike's Arcade RP2A03 revision H, did not work in my boards.

I spent hours trying to work with reseating the Gradius daughterboard, and the Super Mario chips, etc. All it took was popping in one of DNS's known good CPUs and that cleared everything right up.

So, if you have a Vs. system that's just continually blinking, suspect the CPU and you may want to stay away from the ones at Mike's because they didn't work on my Gradius or my Vs. Super Mario Bros.
