Nintendo vs. light gun troubleshooting - needing any and all help

I wanted to get into the vs. gun games so I recently picked up a vs. gun. I had all the required harnesses to get it up and going without having to hack any wires. I added this gun (to a red tent) and after a couple of hours of futzing with brightness had a fairly accurate gun. I'm thinking: "mission accomplished!" and go to bed.
The next night I go back to try it out and it's missing like crazy. It seems like it registers 1 in 100 shots. I mess with the brightness levels but to no avail.
I cracked open the gun and had a look but I don't know where to go from there. I replaced the caps on the small pcb but that didn't help. Is there something I can/should try next? Should I just start looking for a new gun?

I've read around and have seen many frustrated postings about how finicky these guns can be. Can any of the nintendo pros help me out? Any input is appreciated!

I experienced the same thing. I think at that point someone suggested that the optics could be the issue. Never did open the gun up, is there a guide to doing it safely without causing additional damage?

If it is the actual optics. I remember seeing a post on here from long ago about taking the optics out of a nes zapper and with a little slight modification, getting it to work in a vs./playchoice light gun. I added a zapper to my red tent and had issues initially with glare so be wary of the lighting conditions as that affected mine till I got it figured out.

Brad.

Anyone have a link for that? I think I remember seeing a thread like that a while back when first reading about vs. gun stuff but I can't find it now for the life of me.

Yeah, I had some glare issues too when I tried to play during the day instead of at night (when I had set up the brightness), but this seems like something different as I have been adjusting things for days and days and get the same results. It's catching about 1 in 50 shots. I just don't get it; It was perfect for all of a day! Stupid light guns; I'm almost ready to turn a gun on myself. X(
