This isn't a help - I already got my game working. I just wanted to post this so there is an archive for other people who may get a nintendo VS gun game and what I did to get mine to finally work right. (the game is hogan's alley, btw). I did everything possible before trying to replace the gun.

Ok, my hogan's alley didn't register shots very well. It would register a shot, but only about 1 every 10 or so, and most of the time, it didn't hit what I wanted it to.

First, i capped the monitor. At first it didn't help at all. What DID help was taking the layer of dust off of the monitor. Once it was clean, shots started registering more often. Still not accurate though.

Second, I adjusted the brightness. I turned the brightness knob next to the sound knob to about 1/2 way, then adjusted the flyback brightness to the point there were white lines. I turned it down just a little. Shots registered, but wouldn't land. I turned it down just low enough so shots wouldn't register. Then, I adjusted the brightness knob next to the volume knob up some and ended up with a great picture. I have it turned up to the point that you can just 'barely' see lines in the background. Shots register great now.

Once I put the plexi back on, it wasn't registering shots again. So, having come to this problem before with other light gun games, I got a piece of clear plexi to replace the smoked plexi with. Now I'm back where I was.

My final 'problem' was that I would sometimes aim for the right side of the screen and it would hit targets on the left. To solve this issue, I just stood away from the game :) If you are too close, the shots will not always register where they should. From a longer distance, I found my gun extremely accurate.

I hope this helps people in the future! I'm off to play hogan's alley!

Great info. I just picked up a semi-working Vs. Hogan's Alley last week that I was having issues with the light gun registering hits.

I disassembled the game to give it a thorough cleaning and pulled the plexi to wipe the filth of the monitor. The game would then play fine. I reassembled, putting the smoked-plexi bezel back on and the game wouldn't register hits. I removed the plexi and all is good.

I have tried to adjust out the brightness and I have the picture looking really good. My question is that obviously these games worked with the smoked-plexi at one time. Why is it giving me, and the OP, such a difficult time now?

Bump, I would like to revisit this topic now that I moved my Hogan's Alley into the gameroom.

Any reason why the games don't work with smoked plexi? Anyone ever had this problem before?

I never could get my duck hunt to register correctly. Two different cabs both with rebuilt monitors and different guns. Maybe it is the smoke plexi causing the problem, never tried without it. Im thinking about doing the mod to a nes zapper and trying that.
I have the same problem with my buck hunter. It works marginal at best and will never calibrate just right. Supposed to be a brand new gun but I think the gun has issues. I tried two different rebuilt K7000 in it with the same results.
Good luck man, the gun games are finicky.
