Is it possible?

Has it been done?

What would likely be required?

Who has a vs gun for sale?

Should I go the "zapper conversion" route?

Im looking at a duck hunt and hogans alley pcb for my red tent so it's high time to
figure out how to get a light gun involved...

Yes it is possible. Nintendo sold a kit that replaces one of the joysticks. Looks a bit crappy. I would choose an alternative mounting method but that's just me.

Is it even worth doing? I mean the Red Tents are meant for you to sit down and play. Wouldn't a light gun game just boil down to you putting the gun right up against the screen and shooting the targets? I know you can sit, or stand, farther back from the screen too, but it just seems awkward on a Red Tent.

You would also have to uninstall the 2nd player joystick on whatever side you put the game on. That's where the holster for the gun would go. At least it's like that on a Vs. upright control panel.

If you use a Playchoice gun holster, you would still need to find a place to mount it on the cab. And you would need an opening somewhere in the cab for the gun cable to go through.
And I don't know if the Playchoice gun has the same connection as the Vs. gun. So you might need to get a Vs. gun and then find a Playchoice holster if you don't want to uninstall a joystick.

Check this thread and ask for advice on putting a gun in your Red Tent:

Good Question, the answer is simple

In my friends bar where they are upright weary but cocktail friendly, a nintendo red tent with a duck hunt (maybe even a converted zapper rather than a standard "revolver" light gun) will have me swimming in the quarters! The drunken nostalgic impulse quarter doesnt stand a chance against such a machine.

Id like to ask the owner of the machine pictured above machine how it plays...

zapper

kinda of an old post, but i thought i would let people know. i put a zapper gun in my red tent, play is not awkward. i just used a quick connect d-sub connector, so you can go back and forth between gun games and regular games. i will be using a vs gun as soon as my cousin brings me one, but i had to see if the zapper would work, and it did.

red tent/ duck hunt

I found my red tent at an estate auction with duck hunt/ golf and a black vs revolver on the main 2nd control. both the holster and coin slot are labeled; warning alarm will sound if gun is removed from cable...vandals will be prosecuted. the speaker will ring when the gun is unplugged. when I switch the pcb to non-gun games I change the harness from gun to control as well. this red tent has had this gun for a long time... and I am going to keep it as it is. I can still play dual-screen balloonfight, wrecking crew, baseball. the only sacrifice is tennis without 4 player, but I dont know 4 people who would really want to play it anyway. I have collected 20 titles... and tennis is not one of them.

i used the gun on my red tent, and I enjoyed it, wife thought it awkward. Picked up an upright Vs. and she found that even more uncomfortable. So I am back to it on the red tent. For the holster I just open the coin door and throw the gun into it.

Makes it worthwhile if you like the occassional gun game.
