Nintendo Red Tent with Playchoice 10 Kit Restoration Project

Please enjoy before and after photos of my most recent restoration project.
This unit is now fully stock and has some beautiful monitors. I'm happy to finally own a beautiful red tent, and while cosmetically it is not perfect, I am still very happy that it joins my collection. Thanks to those that sold me parts I was missing and those that helped me along this restore. I couldn't have done it without the support of people I met on this forum, so thank you! Some stats are below:

  • 30+ hours total labor and time including driving to pick it up (it was my first tent, I could do it much faster now)
  • Replaced the harness as it was fully hacked
  • New button set from Mike's Arcade
  • New glass on both sides
  • Installed a NOS PC10 factory kit exactly per the manual
  • Was missing the correct power supply, had to replace with a PP1200
  • Fully disassembled joysticks and cleaned them
  • Fully disassembled every screw on the unit and cleaned/painted every single piece of metal and plastic to make it look new.

That is a sweet setup, looks great!

Mind sharing photos of whats going on under the hood, how did all that fit in there?

:)

Thank you! Sure I'll upload some pictures over the next few days of inside the unit. In short, the only extra items under the hood are another harness (for the PC10), a connector between both power supplies to eliminate the interference, and a PC10 power supply. The Playchoice PCB cage, PCB and games are mounted under the unit. It is hard to see in the pics, I'll add a few more that capture the view of that part of the tent.

That is sweet.
I would like to know how you got the PC10 in there and is the working both monitors ???
Great job

The PC10 kit renders 4 player mode unusable...so for balloon fight and tennis I believe, no 4 player mode since only one side is VS. Essentially it is now two separate machines, with two independent PCBs, two power supplies, and the power brick is the only thing shared.

I'm also now only using half of the original harness, so I've tied off literally half of it inside the cabinet and added the PC10 kit harness provided by Nintendo.

The PC10 PCB and carts are in a double length cage (can hold two PC10 pcbs) mounted under the red tent. See pic added in the first post and new pic below. There was a metal vent that I cut out to make the hole in the bottom. This is to allow the PC10 harness to connect to the PCB mounted underneath the red tent.

The instructions are different, which now matches my red tent control panel which is cool. It somehow knows that it is in a red tent simply from the wiring I guess. I'm not sure how that works honestly...

That's what I'm talking about!!! I know red tents, and that is a Beautiful Red Tent! Fantastic work! And the pc10 kit is icing on the cake! Love it!

These were my twins, but they had to be separated. I still have one, but I'm hoping mine meets her twin someday at camp and they make up some bizarre ruse to get the family back together.

Thank to everyone who commented!

I actually traded my red tent leg extension kit for an original tent harness and a few other things from a fellow KLOV member.

Looks great - did you end up making your own harness or were you able to buy one?

Nice work! Kind of sad that you can't play VS Balloon Fight or VS Wrecking Crew anymore...that PC10 PCB cage is amazing (you must really love PlayChoice :)) Do you have a closeup of the modification you made to the power supply? Also, any plans to add a light gun to one side for Duck Hunt/Hogan's Alley/Gumshoe? I'm able to easlily switch between joystick and light gun on my red tents via a quick connector swap, and I mounted the gun holsters to the outside of the cabinet using rare earth magnets :)

Thanks! Waaaaay ahead of you on the light gun...I have one on each side using cut original holsters mounted with rare earth magnets as well. Smart minds think alike!

No modification made to the power supply...it requires two independent PSUs that link together to one ISO.

Awesome! I love the PlayChoice toppers as well. Good to know I can somehow use the existing power supply to power multiple boards.

How are you securing the gun's security cable to the hole below the control panel? I have some extra VS Gun mounting hardware that I can use, but I want to minimize holes in the cabinet while making sure people don't pull the cable too hard...

Also, I just got a red tend leg extension kit from eBay and can't wait to try it out!

I am not using the existing power supply to power multiple boards. I have two power supplies in the cab, one is powering the VS board, one is powering the PC-10 board.

Just a small hole under under the CP to fish the cable through. Pretty simple.

Leg extension kit is cool, but you can't use the leg extension kit AND the playchoice kit on the same machine. There is just no room to do so.

Thanks for the clarification! Looks like I'm in the market for an extra Red Tent power supply :)

I think some of your text was cut off -- if you mean just a small "hole" under the CP (which I already have), my concern is that someone pulling too hard on the gun will rip the cable & wiring out. Just wondering if you have done anything to prevent this, thanks :)

First...you say you bought a leg extension kit on ebay. There was an INCOMPLETE kit on ebay recently sold...it will not work on your machine as it is incomplete. Hopefully that is not the one you bought. It is missing part MDS-10-21 X2 (the actual leg extensions...)

On the cable...there is a lot of slack and the red tent is compact. Meaning...I just have the slack loose in there but I did tie it off with a ziptie inside to a base. I drilled a small hole under the panel to fit the cable on each side.
