Nintendo joysticks - why so little "snap"?

maybe i've only ever played on Nintendo cabinets with worn-out/busted joysticks, but any of the joysticks on Nintendo cabs i've ever played have little to no snap-back (probably the wrong term, but i can't think of another way to describe it) compared to (e.g.) Bally-Midway, Sega, Atari, etc cabinets from the same era (early 80s)

was this by design, or have i only encountered lame/worn-out Nintendo joysticks?

You probably have a good amount of gunk built up in there. There are some good threads on here. I usually take them apart. Soak the internal bearings with wd40 to get rid of all the crap. Oil it and put it all back together. Works great after that!

many thanks to the responders, but even the couple rebuilt Nintendo joysticks i have still don't have the same kinda spring/snap-back as the ones i've felt on a Midway, Atari, etc cabinet from the same era. is that normal?

they feel like garbage but they handle very well. at least on my PlayChoice-10.

thanks for reminding me, I need to go through those still after 6 years. lol
