Just curious as to the BEST LUBE to use for the pillow balls and guide plate area on a Nintendo joystick? My joystick on my Punch-Out!! machine is starting to stick especially to one side. Very dry. My manual describes the LUBE procedure but doesn't suggest what to use?

Hoping to find a suggestion that is easy to obtain. EX: a specific brand from an auto parts or hardware store??

thanks in advance

I used the teflon lube gel they sell at radio shack. It is recommended by marvin3m.com for use on EM pinball machines. It is thick, stays in one place, doesn't attract dust and doesn't break down. Pretty good stuff for being from radio sack.

Thanks! I shall try your suggestion!

PILLOW BALLS = ya sounded FUNNY to me too but that is HOW the original manual describes the area

Can't speak for punch out but in general for nintendo sticks and ONLY nintendo sticks I will use wd40. Nintendo sticks are almost all metal so I've found wd40 to work great and there's little risk of harm to the stick. However this is not true of other joysticks that use more rubber and plastics in their design.

yucky i dont think i would use WD40.. makes to much of a mess.. lube/grease is more reliable, long lasting, rust proof, sticky, dust free, reliable, and stays in the place you put it... wd40 dripps, makes a big mess, stinks, and doesnt last very long and it could and will break down electrical components

This is the stuff you want --> http://www.amazon.com/Super-Lube-Synthetic-51010-Precision/dp/B000BXOGHY

But I also use the generic stuff - comes in the same tube without the brand name.
The Super Lube website says you can buy their products at:
Ace Hardware
Applied Industrial Technologies
Bearing Distributors (BDI)
Bearing Distributors and Drives Inc.
Do-It Best Corp.
E & R Industrial
Fastenal
Florida Bearings, Inc.
General Tool
Johnstone Supply
Kaman Industrial Technologies
K-Tool Corporation
McGuire Bearing Company
McMaster-Carr (search criteria 1378K)
Motion Industries
MSC Industrial
ORS Nasco
Precision Industries
Production Tool Supply
R.S. Hughes
State Supply
Tacoma Screw
Transply
True Value

but you never know so I'd check first. I bought my last tube (Radio Shack brand) at My local Shack but they didn't have it listed online. I've also seen the Super Lube at some of the smaller and bigger Home Improvement stores like Lowes/Home Depot and even at V.I.P. Auto Parts store.
Sometimes it will be found around the checkout counter

but yah id check there first befor you decide to order it online.. and make shure its Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease, for themost part any brand would work.. but if you want the best kind... buy Super-Lube brand..

(Super Lube® Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease) is a patented synthetic NLGI grade 2 heavy-duty, multipurpose lubricant with PTFE. Synthetic base fluids and the addition of PTFE micro powders combine to form a premium lubricant that provides longer life protection against friction, wear, rust and corrosion. Machinery lasts longer, downtime is reduced, and productivity is increased. Super Lube® is compatible with most other lubricants and will not run, drip, evaporate or form gummy deposits, and will not melt or separate.

THis is good stuff too...

(Super Lube® Silicone Lubricating Grease with Syncolon®) (PTFE) has a wider operating range than petroleum based lubricants; Excellent water protection and moisture barrier. Use on Plastic gears, plastic threads, as a damping medium for Dash Pots, lubricate O-Rings, electrical motor bearings and rubber components.

Am I the only one who doesn't mind the smell of WD40? :D Anyway, after reading some suggestions online when I got my DK in 2008, I bought a tube of White Lithium Grease. It seemed to really make a difference. Mine would stick in certain directions and not return easily. A local classic arcade just got a DK Jr. in, and the joystick does the same thing, so I'm bringing it along if I go tomorrow and get that baby working like it should :)

yah iv used White Lithium Grease befor and it does get the job done....

but id still say that Super Lube Multi-Purpose Grease is the best i have found so far.....

but yah White Lithium Grease works good to

feel free to use what you like. As I pointed out with most joysticks I wouldn't use wd40 but on nintendos I have. I think I've used it once in 10 years on my DK and the stick is still in great condition with smooth movement. As for drips you spray then wipe off excess. For what it's worth most sticks don't need much if any lube. Of course 720, hall effects, atari logo ect have plastic on plastic parts so lube helps. On these I use lithium grease or a teflon lube.

I use silicon spray and nothing else.

I second that. Plus it prevents rusting. I used the stuff on my time pilot stick and it too works great

Agreed. If I pick up a Nintendo game and the stick "sticks", I just take the thing apart, clean it real good with WD40, then wipe it down. Once it's put back together I just give it a very small squirt of WD40 and it's good to go.

The first game I did that to was our DKjr and it's been going strong since 1999. Maybe if it were in an arcade being used 10 hours a day, 7 days a week I'd feel differently but for home use WD is fine imo.

I've used white lithium grease before, it works great.

You know, I really thought that this thread would have evolved into a completely juvenile sexual discussion by the second page. I'm sorta disappointed... ;)
