Nintendo Hum - SOLVED! (20EZ buzz)

Use a log pot next time and it won't be as sensitive.
Isn't it the log pot that's making it sensitive? The slightest change and it changes by 10 or by 100. I figure a linear pot would be better?

The OP has a linear pot according to the link he posted from Digikey in the first post.

A Log pot is also called an audio taper pot. I'm probably not going to explain the why very well so I'll just let you google it. It has to do with how the human ear works and db levels. In short though, a linear pot will have a large volume increase with very little physical travel of the pot. A log pot allows more physical travel of the pot without as much change in the lower end of volume control where the ear is more sensitive to changes.

Newbie question, the cap that is moved to C379, does it need to be installed in a specific way? In the original picture, it looks like the label side faces the JB connector, but before I install everything and plug it in, I wanted to be sure.

Thanks for the clarification on this!

I just did this mod on my DKJr and I have to thank the OP for posting it with the exact part you need. It is super easy and it COMPLETELY eliminated the hum from my game!

When I got the game it had terrible hum, I recapped the audio amp and that took care of a lot of it, but it was still present. This mod did the trick. This will be an automatic mod for me on every Nintendo cab I get from here on out.

Can't thank you enough for posting this tip. My DKjr hums like a bastard and I've rebuilt everything in it. I just ordered 3 of those pots from digikey.

Can't wait for the quiet, crisp Nintendo sounds.

Thanks again!

I figured out the cap does have to face the JB connector as in the original picture. And this greatly helped my DK hum. Thanks again to the original poster on this quick fix to this sound issue!

Glad to hear this worked for you! And to answer your question, this type of cap doesn't have polarity you should be able to install it in any direction.

What is the value of the transistor at Q4? A direct link to a replacement offered "anywhere" would help guys like me who simply "act" like they know what they are doing...

:D

Seriously? I just copied somebody else, or got the value from the schematics. I rarely "know" anything.

I just replaced Q4 with an NTE85...and while I "think" the whirring (wawawawawawa) is a little fainter... (maybe wishful thinking?) it's still there. I've not done the audio amp mod, but my "hum" isn't very bad at all... and to be honest, the whirring isn't terrible either... the room has to be quiet to really hear it... I was hoping to be able to eliminate it. Oh well.

before i put my 20EZ back in the cabinet, would love to hit this and buy a few of these pots for future 20EZs
