Nintendo Helifire Restoration

It's been a while. I managed to get some of the major delamination taken of. Started building the new base(s). Decided to build one for Radarscope and my red DK at the same time. Some progress pics.

First two pics before, second two after. I also got all the buttons on the CP fixed up and am now working on the Joystick. Found out is was missing an e-clip so I have to find one of those.

New base complete. Cabinet paint touched up.

Looks good. Those are cool cabinets.

I'm just curious on the touch up. Are you using any bondo, and are you getting decent results with the finish blending with the original Nintendo finish? My cab doesn't have anything nearly as bad as that big enamel split you have but it has a little of that (especially on the back edge). I want to avoid doing the whole cab if possible but I'm also sceptical that you can get good results with touchup paint.

Why I'm glad you asked about the t-molding. I got it at:

http://www.chompingquarters.com/

The best reproduction flat nintendo molding available. I can't wait to do my DK and Radarscope cabinets to match, or should I say re-due.

Jam - I was pretty successful at bonding the delamination back with wood glue and clamping. It turned out nice. Then I got some paint color matched and used a small brush to make sure I was only getting the area's that needed it. I felt that I wanted to keep as much of the original finish as possible so the areas I touched up were mainly small and around the edges. The paint is not perfect but confined to a small area it is hardly noticable. Could you get a better finish by bondo, sand, and complete repaint or viynl, sure. But then it wouldn't have the original finish now would it.

This game seems to be so rare, that I am glad you are keeping it as original as possible.

Wow. Looking great! That's one heck of a rare game too!

I'm really interested in the monitor that the game uses. Do you have any more pictures of it? Is it mostly just a Sanyo in a wooden box, or something different? Does it also use inverted video?

-Ian

Hey Ian - It is a Sanyo "monitor in a box". It should be inverted video. It is the same monitor in early Radarscope which is interchangeable with DK and later framed Sanyo's.

What type of pictures are you looking for? I looked back at the pictures on the first page of this thread and threre are quite a few. Just let me know what specifically you want and I can try to get some pics.

I was just kind of wondering what it looked like from the front. Wondering if it was originally intended to be a television cabinet or something. It's almost what it looks like from the back.

Wow!! Fantastic looking cab! You've done a great job so far. Would it be a whole lot of trouble getting some measurements of it? That would be a nice cab to make a reproduction out of for those of us who will prolly never see up close...

What I'm thinking about doing with my Red DK is using some bondo on the back edeges where the paint has chipped off entirely, and then just sanding that small area and using touch up paint to try to blend in with the original finish. This would most likely be very tedious and would not give the same mint results as repaiting the whole cab but it would save the original finish, which is pretty good in most spots. I'm just not sure I'll get passable results with this method.

Previous owners have touched the cab up with varrying degrees of success but I'm thinking about stripping off all the old touch ups and doing a pain staking bondo-touchup to get as close as possible. If it were not for the previouls touch up attempts I probably would have just left it alone.

Well I was going to upload some pictures as I've begun making some progress finally again but I am having trouble doing so. It appear that the file size I can upload is extremely small compared to back when i was putting pic's up before. Not sure why.

Power supply is now done. Lot's a pic's, can't post even 1 at their resolution.

Next up, coin door and monitor.

I want to say I'm proud of you, but that sounds weird. I would buy any of those red cabs off you, I'm in love.

How did you come across the Hellifire?

Goog luck with the restoration Murph. Hope it comes out as well as the virtual model you helped me with (which came out great btw).

Trying some pictures. Got them resized to fit.

Very unusual design compared to all the other Nintendo cabinets.

Any idea why they decided to change it after just one game?
