Can all Nintendo classic games work in all early Nintendo machines? Like, could I put a Donkey Kong 3 board in a DK cabinet or vice versa? Obviously I'm not talking about the horizontal monitor games.

DK, DK JR., and DK 3 are all compatible with the Nintendo Edge Connector.

DK3 uses an edge connector only. You can use a DK and DK Jr. 2 board with a DK3 harness.

DK uses tiny connectors. You can put a DK JR. in a DK cabinet and vice versa (using the tiny connectors).

I think some JR cabs had the edge connector.

But could I put a DK3 board in a DK cocktail/cabinet? Or a Mario Bros./Popeye if I flip the monitor?

Yes and no. DK cocktails use the small connectors not the edge connector. You could put a new harness in it and do it. Mario Bros and Popeye use very similiar harnesses but they use the edge connector and the controls are in different pins. - Barry

who knows. i have a dk3, but i noticed the CP uses molex style for the buttons/joy. while the dk stuff uses the smaller pinned connectors. or is mine just ass backwards =p

So, ideally a DK3 would be best, as I could just directly swap Donkey Kong and Jr. into it?

Yes, as long as your DK and Junior boardsets have the rainbow cable installed.

DK3 used a different harness with a different style at the CP, but it's fine as the boardset just plugs in at the edge connector. - Barry
