Just wondering - how do people refinish Nintendo cabs?

I believe they are wood covered with vinyl... but maybe I am wrong.
I am looking at refinishing mine and wasnt sure where to start.

My plywood cab has a thin laminate and my particle board cab has painted sides/laminate front. I know alot of people have painted them and that looks good. The vinyl from Rich at this old game that some have used looks great. I will try the vinyl if I ever get around to refurbing by Hunior. - Barry

If you have a plywood cab, it is a baked enamel finish. If it is a part board cab, you have laminate. I restore mine with oil-based paint or with vinyl. Both work well.

I guess I never looked real close... but today I was doing some prep work for some future restores and I noticed around the speaker slots that there was an actual laminate or something on top of the wood... so I thought - I better post about this and find out the do's and don'ts before I start these

Its not vinyl its a laminate, like a countertop but very thin. People have looked for years and there are no matching laminate colors for the blue, think there is an orange or red that is close.
To redo the cab people paint, there are many paint codes online, but with them fazing out oil paints its impossible to get many of the mixes.
TexasHotShot always said semi gloss "Amsterdam" blue by Glidden is a perfect match. But I have not tried it yet.

After reading phet's Mario Bros Widebody I was curious to know more about the vinyl installation process.

Phet said:
I stripped it, cleaned it, sanded, primed, painted and installed Rich's Orange Vinyl kit.

When you say stripped does that mean you took all of the original laminate off?

I've got two WB's that need restoring, two DKs one red and one blue, and a DK Jr. That all need restoring and would love to use vinyl if I only knew how.

It's not laminate, it's baked enamel paint. I know this for a fact as this particular cab was in a damp basement for years and had a few mildew spots form under the enamel surface. You could see the PAINT bubbling and flaking off wherever the mildew had occurred. I have huge flakes in a baggy if anyone would care to have them analyzed. And no, I didn't strip the paint, just bondoed and sanded it before priming. Just bondo, sand, prime, paint, apply vinyl. Pretty basic. By strip, I meant stripping the cab of all of its parts, hardware and bolts.

Thanks for the clarification. I really need to get out in my garage and do it. How many sheets of vinyl did you order from thisoldgame.com ?

dude, You STILL havent gotten to working on that ninty???

what the krap man!!! get to it!!!!!

Which ninty? I've got 5~! I had to finish school and start raising two more kids~! Time has been tight. I've got all the monitors capped and all the games are working, I just need to make them pretty, One cab at a time.

So if your cab has vinyl coating and you want to paint do you still sand before? If so what grit is good for the vinyl? I'm looking to do my dk jr this week i hope. I just didn't know what kind of trouble i would run into.
