What's the protocol with regards to applying sideart to a Nintendo cab that has the row of diagonal metal studs on the side panels?

As these are not flush, its going to affect the artwork in some way.

Remove studs, apply artwork, rescrew studs and have them showing over the sideart?

Or just apply the sideart over the studs?

Or am I missing something?

Remove studs, apply sideart, poke studs through sideart and apply bolts.

Not sure why Nintendo chose to have those studs as they do not seem to serve any purpose (except for the last ones which hold the top monitor support brackets).

Nintendo fitted most of its cabs at the factory with the ability to mount the monitor either horizontally (popeye, VS games) or vertically (DK).

You should mount the bolts outside your graphics.

The first part of your statement is incorrect. DK and DKJR cabs were only issued with vertical mounting hardware. The reason so many have the extra bolts today is from conversions to VS and Mario. I have personally owned 3 DK/DKJR's with vertical bolts only.

But yes, the bolts are intended to poke through the art, as stated.

Thanks.

Guess I can double check which studs are used for something and maybe remove those, and fill the woodwork before aplying sideart, so that less are showing.

There's really no need. People expect that these bolts are through the artwork on these cabs.

Yeah, I wouldn't fill them in either. So many Ninty cabs have them, it's pretty much expected.

I know some of the original cabs only had 2 or 3 holes drilled at the factory, but many more of them were pre-drilled for both applications.

Bottom line is it's extra work you don't need to do.

I have seen a few restorations were the bolts were installed and then tightened so the heads did not stick-out further than the cabinet sides. The side-art was then applied on top of the bolts. If you never intend to convert the game, then the bolts are truly optional, however as said by several others here, most Nintendo cabinets have them and through the artwork.

If you're going to use the monitor vertically, pull the 3 lower bolts out and either fill them or apply the art over them and don't put the bolts back. only install the top 2 after the artwork is on. If you're doing a horizontal, then do the opposite. I think it looks much better only installing the bolts you need. - Barry
