Museum of the Game® & International Arcade Museum® Forums

Hey all! I picked up a really trashed Night Driver last fall. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the first arcade game I ever played, sitting by itself in the middle of a gift shop in a nearby mall when I was a little kid.

I have done most of the cosmetic repairs, which were extensive, and have it ready to reassemble.

But—I just wrapped up fixing the wiring and edge connector on the board and get a dreaded alphanumeric garbage screen. It is getting a solid 5v across all the 5v rails and the ground rails are all good. I replaced the voltage stepdown transistor on the board with a modern replacement to dial it in. Before that it was running at 4.5v with the same garbage.

CPU tries to work—there's activity on all the lines in and out with a logic probe that sounds normal. But the reset pin is toggliing.

I know it can be a lot of things—RAM, ROM, PROMs…but the manual does narrow it down if there are boxes at the bottom of the screen and there are.

There's not a ton of help in the forum history here on it. I have a probe, scope, and ambition. So if there's a good way to narrow it down I'd appreciate the guidance. This will be the subject of my next YouTube restoration so you can be a hero :)

Thanks!
