I have an FJ Cruiser. It's too short for full size cabs, but I've managed to fit two cocktails in it simultaneously as the interior volume is very tall. If I need to deal with something large I either hook up a trailer to it, or use my wife's RAV4 Hybrid (which is also kinda 4wd and we've taken it offroading before).
I use a Transit Connect, which I originally bought to haul gear for my band. It's pretty great for single game trips... although I have gotten two cabarets in it at once. The largest game I have gotten in it has been a dedicated Simpsons without having to take off the control panel. I prefer using a van over a truck just to keep games out of the weather while traveling. I also dig the lower loading height compared to a truck.
You can hate on minivans all you want, but can't deny their utility! Our town and country could hold 4x8 sheets of plywood flat. It was great for games. And, like GothGirl said, low height made it easier to load/unload.
