This was one of my first game purchases 16+ years ago. It was at an auction in Louisville that most of the "classics" at the time someone (seller?) would get the first bid of $25 and we "had" to pay the next price of $35. We could never get the $25 bid. Say it with me "if I knew then what I know now.....". You can still see the auction sticker on the marquee. I never heard of goof-off until this site (yes, I have the safe-for-plastic stuff).

Every MB I played BITD had a crummy CPO, so the one on this machine never really bothered me. Then I had to order some parts from the site that reproduces the CPO so I ordered one (sorry, can't remember QuarterArcade?). Then the side art sold out and we started a campaign to get another "last run" done. Success.

Now, I can't stick new sideart and CPO on a machine with nicks, bangs, and gouges. So, a restore is in order - although its probably better to call it a "cleanup and make it more presentable" project.

I'm scared to see all the dirt and grime in the bottom for all these years!

Initial cleanup

I know, this is boring, but I like documenting some of this. Its a PITA, but it has to be done.

Its amazing how many and the places quarters can hide. I've now found $1.25 in the power supply "station" of DK and MB. I guess I need to check Popeye :)

I swipe through with the shopvac and then a wash down with some water and a little bleach.....look *green* grounding strips!

And look - found out where that metal piece goes. I think with some super glue it will fit and stay on there.

Not too grimy... and it looks like it cleaned up nicely!

Mario WB is my favorite Nintendo cab... These look really good when they are cleaned up.

It's also one fun two player game IMHO. I hope to get one at some point.

PS. Stop calling your restorations boring!!!! Any restoration is a good thing... and we all like to look at the insides and outsides of these things no matter how many times we've seen them. Its all good stuff!

Small update

Thanks Retro - thats the way I feel - I can look at multiple pictures and descriptions of the same game being worked on - its great for ideas and to learn how what works and what doesn't.

A quick update - learning from my previous two, I'm working on the coindoors early. They have/had a texture to them, maybe "hammered"? I'll go look at some other restores and see if anyone mentions it. Note that the bottom door didn't strip as cleanly as the top. I wonder if it was painted different. The sander will finish is off.

Also, worked on the power station while waiting for the orange stuff to work its magic. Tapped the 120v for the extension cord for the replacement marquee light. Works great. I think every marquee light is getting replaced in future restores.

Stripped the CP. Used a razor blade in a small paint scraper. After I got the top of the CPO off I threw on some orange stripper. That works great for the glue residue - just let it set and scrape it off with a good putty knife.

After sanding, I think I'll need to hit it will some silver rustoleum before putting the new CPO on. I'll go see what others have done before I do that.

I'll be replacing all 4 buttons (my friend's MB (non-wb) has the mismatched buttons as well - one might think they came that way!)

This will be my first CPO to apply (both Gorf and DK were non-adhesive) - I'm worried about screwing it up....

Oh... don't use silver paint... it really doesn't dry well and will have a poor overall bond. If it were me, I would just go with 2 really thin coats of gray metal primer....

Ah, thats what I was afraid of (poor bond) for any painting, I just happen to have some metallic silver left over from another project. I'll pick up some gray metal primer on the next run.

thanks!

More progress....

Rebuilt the joysticks - this was basically dismantling them, spraying some ruster removal on the top plate of the joysticks and cleaning and greasing up the, uh, bearing? Whatever that is the joystick pivots in...

Cleaned the cage with 409, it certainly looks better (no picture yet). I went ahead and installed the high-score kit and re-installed the PCB just to get it out of the way.

Painted (just metal primer) the coin bucket and the CP brackets (both sets).

The coin doors got a first coat of black-hammered rustoleum.

Primed the CP. I'm worried about applying the CPO. I'm trying to come up with a system to make sure it goes on straight and keeping the bends firmly attached for a day or so.....I'm going to think about it for a bit.

Got to order some replacement buttons.

Update: CP, coindoors

Okay, finished painting and redoing the coin doors and the control panel. I ended up hitting the CP with some gray metal primer before putting the CPO on.

This was my first CPO. I don't know how others apply them, but I was worried to death about having it misaligned. I basically put 4 of the joystick bolts through the CPO and into the CP on the left, bent the right side back half way and peeled and cut half the backing off. Then I inserted the other 4 screws into the right side and carefully lined them up with the CP holes. I then lifted the left side and pulled the backing off and repeated. Then used some spring clamps on the edges overnight.

Installed new buttons from Mikes Arcade and here it is:

Coindoor pictures

I used rust-o-leum black-hammered on the coin doors. There's probably a bit more shine to them than original, but the texture seems right.

I think I'm going to hunt down a local to try powder coating the next machine's coin doors. I hate doing them. These were a bit easier because all the hardware came off and the door hinge was screwed on (at least the frame side).

I wonder if you could find a lower luster clear paint to cover it with to bring the sheen down?

The project is looking good. I've got one of these waiting in the wings to be restored, but it's at least 3 games away.

Progress....no picts, some whining

Well, started painting. I got a good coat of rust-o-leum black on the front-wow that makes a difference! I decided I liked the oil-based paint on the front so I picked up some orange in an oil for the sides.

Tonight I went to put the second coat on the sides. Its probably going to take a 3rd coat :(

While that was sitting I was looking at the front and there was a lot more "gunk" on it in the paint finish and I decided to take a razor and shave them down. Then I went ahead and took the steel wool to it to smooth it out some more. In between I got distracted with the kids and went to shake the quart of black paint and forgot I already had and the lid was loose. Wow, 1/2 quart of black rust-o-leum came out.

About the only good thing was it didn't get on anything important. Still one of those blood pressure moments.

Hopefully some pictures tomorrow. Package from Bob R. came yesterday so I have a capkit for the monitor. Its needed one for 15 years, and its been getting worse and worse.
