Next Gen Nintendo Handheld - Nintendo 3DS - 2011 Release

I don't know. I'm not thrilled just yet. They say it's a "next gen," but it sounds to me like it's just another variation of the DS (Hence, 3DS).

I know Nintendo has always been about innovation and I'm all for that, but I was hoping their next handheld would be a new format with gamecube quality hardware. Unless it is and they are just not revealing it yet. It's DS backwards compatible though so it has to have DS hardware. You know their going to do 4-5 variations to this one too (3DS Lite, 3DSi, 3DSXLi, 3DSXXLi, etc.).

We'll have to wait until E3 to see actual hardware and specs.

Yeah I already heard about this. I'm not too excited about it. Nintendo's strategy now seems to be incrementally changing/improving its consoles frequently instead of just coming out with something totally new every five years or so. I think that is what they will end up doing with the Wii as well. Nintendo's next home console will likely just be a Wii capable of HD and with a larger storage capacity. I don't really like this strategy. This coming from a guy with a DS phat, two DS lites, and a DSi and soon to have a DSi XL.

I completely agree. Yet, I am in the same boat as you. Regardless of how apprehensive I am about Nintendo's console development strategies, I'm always there picking up my Nintendo new console on launch day. What can I say? I'm a sucker.

Until they make a DS that blows me, Im not interested.

You can blow (into) the DS right now! Does that count?

It looks like Nintendo is stealing another page out of the Apple handbook - yearly upgrades to existing products that everyone runs out to buy. I guess it makes sense since people obviously spend their money on these things. I have a DS Lite (my only DS) and I really like it but I'm not upgrading unless there are at least 4-5 AAA games that require the new hardware.

I thought I had read that the 3DS would be capable of rendering 3D game similar to GC? Could be wrong, but I thought I read that someplace.

I sure hope so. Otherwise, they shouldn't call it a next gen. To me, next gen means new hardware, new format, better quality games.

they have 3d televisions where you dont need glasses. But i believe the price tag was around 30,000 for a 50". Its the type of screen or something but I have seen one. its pretty crazy.

They are much more reasonable than that now.

As for the 3DS, the assumption is that it will be "3D" similar to this DSi game, though probably make better use of such technology.
