News from ColorDMD

Just a quick announcement to let you know we've updated our site.

COLORDMD STATUS UPDATE

There's been a lot of activity over the last few months to pull the ColorDMD together and we're starting to enter what we expect to be the home stretch. Since our previous board was revealed, we have improved the board design and added USB support for firmware updates. We also improved our mounting bracket to fit in both WPC95 and WPC games. Many parts have been ordered and we expect board assembly to begin later this month. In addition, Chris has created some custom tooling to assist with cable assembly.

Instead of a preorder, we've decided to just build up the first run and list it for sale once it's ready. First run units will be available both through our website as well as through one of our distributors. We'll send out further updates to the mailing list as we move closer to a release date.

MARCH SHOW APPEARANCES

It's only February, but we have two show appearances lined up for 2012. We'll be at the Ohio Pinball Show on March 9-10, and then at the Texas Pinball Festival on March 23-25. Please visit our website for more show information and watch for some further announcements later this month!

Can't wait to see it in texas.

Supposedly they're supposed to be showing it off on Mideval Madness. I wanted to play MM, I could care less about the color DMD. It's cool, but I don't even own a DMD game yet, and another expensive mod for an 8000$ pin? Oh, great. Let me hop right on that!

I expect the line to be long enough that I will never get to play it. I'll be jamming over at the Hercules and getting my wife to play some of my favorite games.

Then why post?

These guys have spent an incredible amount of time, energy and money to try and make our hobby better, why would you shit on their thread?
The overall tone of your post is disrespectful and uncalled for.

Huh?

Who?

The colorDMD guys? They haven't even released a product yet. If you thought I was bagging on the TPF people, you're full of it. If you're jumping my ass over the colorDMD, sorry, I don't get it.

My comment was relevant because I want to play MM, but as far as I know, thre will only be one at the show, and the draw will be even greater now that they're going to put a CDMD in it. Frankly, I think they're making a mistake in marketing by aiming this thing at the extreme high end collectors first. Would be nice if they would show it off in something that a normal human being might be able to own, like a NIB Stern LE. Oh wait, no...those are 8000$ too. I would love to see the thing on a more "common" machine, just to see what they can really do with it. Would also be fun to see it working on a non-Williams, even though in theory, that should be pretty trivial at this point.

"Their" thread? Is Krajkerjac working for them? He was just reposting something from RPG AFAIK.

Summary: What...EVER. I'm just going to assume you're looking for a reason to flame today, not really sure what I posted warranted that. My life goes on, same as it was before. Whee.

Hmm this is the first time I have heard about it..

Wow thats on hell of a mod! Amazing! I'm amazed that Stern hasnt
already gobbled this up.

Get Rocky and Bullwinkle working on it and I'll buy one:)

I was wondering if Stern would try to do that... I'm not sure it would make a difference. Then again, LCDs are cheaper than DMDs so you've gotta wonder why they haven't done this already, LOL.

Guess it all depends on how the LCD on WOZ looks. Personally, from the test shots they've released, I like the old DMD/CDMD better, but the video and stuff may keep people more entertained while waiting for their turn...who knows. I like the art involved in creating the DMD animations, and I'd put good money on Stern using a bunch of licenced stock footage for a LCD screen.

Not that they aren't pretty much already doing that by turning movie scenes into DMD ones.

Stern doesnt have any competition until WOZ comes out, no reason to
innovate unless its cheaper. Maybe DMD's are more rugged compared to
LCD's for games that get routed?

Its still neat these can update old games to use color without changing the game code.

There is a HUGE amount of code to be changed!
For a color DMD, each pixel needs to be "relearned". It's not a simple plug and play on the manufacturing end, it will be for the end user though...

It'll be a great thing to see for AFM! And a few others...

The last batch of late 90's Williams games had the best DMD art and animation - so those are a natural choice to colorize. The fact that people who own the WPC'95 games are known to drop serious coin is another incentive...you can't blame them for doing these games first. I mean...why would they waste their time colorizing Lethal Weapon 3? LOL ;)

I've seen the Color AFM in person and it looks incredible! I really hope they figure out a way to implement it on Cirqus Voltaire since the DMD is down in the playfield and kinda interacts with the gameplay...if that was in color it would be unreal, but I'm not sure they can due to the size. It's actually a small LCD monitor with only the "DMD sized" portion used. If you see it outside of the game, it looks like a letterboxed movie. I hope Monster Bash is in the queue since I just picked one up....MB has really amazing animation, especially the Frankenstein sequence...in color it would be so slick!

Programming though is on the CDMD board itself though, right? Gotta be some crazy intercept-and-interpret stuff going on there. Wonder what the display lag is relative to an original DMD?

*ediT* Thanks man. I couldn't ever place why CV looked wierd on IPDB...totally had no clue that the DMD was in the playfield. Have never played it. :|

What do you think the color DMD is? the "Color DMD" is just an LCD screen, so there should be no difference from WOZ unless one is using a better type of panel (IPS vs TN etc)

Okay, let me clarify. I like the art style of using a "color DMD" even though it's not a "DMD" at all, over things like slightly animated artwork/paintings with a score display layered over it. It's just my personal preference is all.

Color DMD is using laptop screen "FIT IN" where the DMD would be. Only a small portion of the screen is used.

WOZ is a WG monitor in the backglass area... two completely differnt things...

WOZ is going to need special glass to keep the glare down I imagine.

Exactly. it ist just an lcd simulating a dmds matrix in color. becuz gawd knows other wise they would have to do a lot more art for the reprogram.

WOZECLE comes with optical glare-free glass. :)

Follow me here..

I listened to a George Gomez mp3 of a talk he gave about Transformers. He said "say goodbye to our little orange friend". I assumed he meant that Stern would be loosing the orange DMD. I must have been mistaken.

Anyone else know what I'm referring to that can elaborate?
