Newest Acquisition: Donky Kong Cocktail Table

OK I took today to clean the inside of the cabinet and cap the monitor. Capping helped the fade and lines, but didn't help the colors, so I swapped in a new board, but I couldn't get it to sync. Took the CPU off the original boardstack and paired it with the second boardstack and Success!! Went from this:

Now of course I noted the title screen difference, so did I upgrade away from the ladder cheat, or revert back to it by swapping the CPU's? Also, neither board was in cocktail mode. Which dip switch corrects that on the 4 board stack?

Nice machine!!!!! Looks like my old one :) Im glad its going to a good home and will be well played and kept in good shape. That picture looks great now!!

Neither. The CPU had nothing to do with it. The "cheat" code is in the 4 main program roms on the cpu board. Basically one of your boards has it, the other does not. The one you currently have the CPU in has the ladder "cheat," the other board you pulled it from has late revision roms (no "cheat").

Huh? If the 4 program ROMs on the CPU board contain the cheat, and I swapped out the original CPU with the one from my extra board stack, how does the CPU being swapped have nothing to do with it? Seems it has everything to do with it.

By "CPU" I literally mean the CPU chip itself, not the CPU pcb (1/4 of the stack). If you swapped the z80A alone (which is how I interpret it), then apply my statement. If you actually swapped the CPU pcb, then you have up/downgraded TO the "cheat" by doing so.

Again, it's in the 4 main program roms (2532's), so it should be pretty easy to figure out what you've done, regardless of my interpretation of your swapping efforts.

This, and that's what I thought. I meant the entire CPU PCB. The colors were wrong on the original, and the xtra stack wouldn't sync. I essentially made one stack from 2, and in the process, downgraded to the ladder cheat. Sweet. Now I'll send the other stack out for repair. Now which dip controls cocktail mode? Anyone know?

Thanks Johnny Boy. I love this little machine, and it's my daughter's new favorite too. She stood out in the garage for 20 minutes playing it until bedtime. Score!

I think kids are automatically attracted to cocktails more as they can just go right up to them and start playing and dont need to worry about a stool.

Well, other than not having an official 'spot' for this one yet, it's in the gameroom and was played non-stop on Saturday. This game rocks. I really wish I would have installed a few outlets in the floor 5 years ago though. I hate having to have cords running across the carpet. It used to only be my Millipede, now

"There's 2 of them!"

I had a Popeye cocktail. I liked it (and convinced myself that I liked it) but sold it so I could bring an upright down here. Nintendo cocktails blow ass. There's nothing like a joystick in your crotch. Uprights FTW. :)

Come one Phet, get an upright! :) I know you are trying to fool yourself into thinking it's cool, but really, uprights are where it is at! Midway cocktails are cool. Nintendo cocktails suck. Either way, I love you.... and Jow.

This was the first DK machine I ever played. I like the look, the sound and I like the feel of it. I had a perfect DK upright and sold it because it bored me. This makes me smile and that's all I care about.

Congrats on recreating Pizza Hut circa 1983 in your basement. ;)

hahahha. I agree, though, there is something endearing about the Ninty cocktails. But, the uprights just plain rock.

I think nostalgia is the only reason anyone would enjoy these... :D

Nice get! :)

Congrats! There's a streak house near me that has one of these machines. I've been going there quite a bit for their weekly trivia competition and only last week did I actually play it. I think it even has a high score save because the high score was always 17,000 or so (unless they leave it on 24/7). I had to take that score down and it was only the 2nd time I've played a DK cocktail. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I still scored a bit over 62,000.

Cool! I actually am a big fan of those Nintendo cocktails. They are very compact, nifty little machines. I'd like to add a DK cocktail to my collection someday.

Congrats on the new addition to your arcade!
