Hey guys. First I'd like to say I love reading this forum and its a big reason why I decided to finally buy an arcade cab. Great info and insight here.
I'm 33 and just picked up my first cab....One of my all time favorites, Track and Field.
It's an original cab which really excited me being my first one. It was so awesome to go into the back of the game and see the serial #, service records, license stickers for each year for NC on the side 1988-89 being the last one I believe...even found a customer response card laying inside from 1983 showing the delivery date and when and where it was built. I know I'm probably sounding lame, but it was so awesome...like a trip back into the past going into that game.
It needs some cosmetic work which I can handle, no prob there.
But a couple things that I'm not sure about the game are technical issues, which I know nothing. I was thinking this would be the best way to learn some things though.
First problem is that I can't seem to find the service switch. There is a switch near the coin box area where I thought the service switch would be, but it seems to just adjust the volume. I'd like to be able to get into the main menu to change some of the settings. Am I missing this somehow, or is it possible there just isn't one?
Another issue is in the game. The game plays fine, looks great...but I'm noticing on a few of the events that there is a just a bunch of junk covering where the high score records should be. Like symbols or something. Is this a board issue? I have no clue. I'm hoping some of you guys may be able to help. If not, still thank you for what you offer to this forum and thanks for leading me into this great hobby to help preserve our youth and history of gaming.

here is a link to the track and field manual.

crazykong.com is your friend. :O)

If I remember correctly (IIRC) I never did go into "test mode" in my track and field or hyper sports. The dip switch settings covered everything.

I seem to remember a thread very recently where channelmanic responded to a similar issue about flipping the dipswitch that resets high scores, turning the game off and then flipping that same switch back and turning the game back on. That could/should take care of the issue. Replacing the battery is a good idea as well for maintaining high scores, and insuring your current battery isn't leaking and destroying your main board.

welcome!

Welcome. #1 Post pics when you bought a new cab. #2 Let us know how much you paid for it.

:) Just fooling with you..... I think I know what the problem is, but post pic to make sure. The battery that save hi-score on the pcb is dead. Replace it and you should be good.

Hey fellas,
Thanks for the nice responses. Yea I'm very excited to have found a Track and Field. I don't have a lot of space in my house, and the wife is not too thrilled about this one, so I have to be very selective in any cabs I do bring in.
gprotein, I posted some pics of it which I wanted to do from the start, but couldn't find the camera. I paid $250 for it which I thought was fair considering its not in the best shape cosmetically, but the game works good and the monitor still looks great imo. I'm just happy to have found T&F at a price I could afford!
I just picked it up a few days ago...so far I just small projects: readjusted the buttons after years of T&F pounding on them, replaced the starter to the marquee light and got that fired up, and got inside to remove the plexi for cleaning, also cleaned the monitor. I couldn't believe how dirty both were...just black! The guy who sold it was worried that it might be a monitor problem because it was so light looking and faded..or it just needed to be adjusted. When he said that, I'm thinking in my head, no thats just because it hasn't been cleaned in 27 years. It looks great now.
I'm planning to start with the control panel. Its very dirty and the overlay is really a mess...it probably looks better in photos than in person. The metal is rusted up a bit so that will need to be sanded also. The buttons need to be cleaned as well.
Thanks for all the insight into the problems I mentioned so far. Problem is that I'm not sure what and where the dip switches and battery are. Again please excuse my ignorance...like I said I learning as I go with this. But hopefully I can learn I few things technically about these cabs and go from there. Its so addicting, I'm already thinking about sneaking another one down in the basement when the wife is not home!
Cheers fellas and thanks again!

Welcome! Tron guy posted the link to the manual. That will show you the dip switch settings, etc. Everyone on here can help you with the game, but no one on here can help you with the wife. If you find out how to convert her, please let me know!

Ha! I think there's no chance of converting. When I started mentioning to her about possibly buying a cab...I really think she thought I was joking. Like she thought I wasn't serious that I'd actually buy one and those things just belong in arcades and amusement parks not in our house. So it was almost like she sounded cool about it, but never gave a true yes or no.........which means yes to us guys! It wasn't til she heard my buddy and I taking the door off at 9 at night last Tuesday til she realized I wasn't joking. We actually are getting married in SC in 3 weeks...we're from Cleveland. The next day when I got home from work I really thought we might not be going to SC. But she's ok with it now.

It's just so funny how much women hate arcade games...they'd probably rather you have some weekend fling with some broad then you come home with Qbert.

Just remember- it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

EDIT: Sorry to hear that you are from Cleveland :001_sbiggrin:

Isn't that the truth for both statements! Also with the cabs they weigh 350lbs, so if she hates it so much...she can carry it up the stairs out of the basement. Guarantee that baby is not going anywhere!

I do have the board out...thats where I get lost. Not sure what to look for.

It'll look something like this, though they are usually black or blue on boards of that era:

Awesome thanks Oryk....I found them now. I was actually looking for something just like that because I've seen them before...but these were much smaller almost blended right with the rest of the board!!!

Guys thanks again for the help...everything is working great now, the high scores are saving and the world record box is clean.
Now its time to start to do the refurb, which I can handle the work, but I'm sure some more questions will pop up.
Thanks again!!
