Hi all,

I'm quite new here. I'm looking to start on a project involving a Genesis or NES and a generic empty cab.

What I plan to do is: strip the machine of everything inside, including the controls, get some TV to replace the CRT, connect the game system to the CRT, replace the controls with one of those fighting game pads (with the joystick and controller buttons), and assemble it all.

I am not involved with MAME, arcade electronics, or anything. Heck, I don't even know if I'll be able to get the CP out without wrecking the machine.

This is what I have my eye on:

Is this just a really stupid idea? Will it work?

And most importantly, what is the standard size for a Neo-Geo CRT, so that I know which size TV to get?

That cabinet is known as a dynamo cut corner.
It looks like it had a 19" monitor at one time.

No sense in wasting a perfectly good cabinet by putting a game console in it.
Arcade games are much more interesting.

Once you have the cabinet, half the work is already done.

why not having them altogether(arcade and home videogames) through emulation like I did?
it will make you super happy and complete

This is not the right forum for your question. While it is true that there are a few people here who may have done what you are asking the majority of people on this forum are about true arcade games and hacking apart a cab in order to build what you want does not keep with the spirit of this forum.

You should try your luck on the BYOAC forums

at least you aren't kill a cab.

Yes BYOAC would be a much more helpful resource than these forums.
Guys around here are all about "preservation."

MAME and emulation can be cool but isn't the point or heart of what guys here want to accomplish.

I don't see exactly how this could be "preserved". It's been stripped of everything except the CP, coin mech, and that little shelf.

I'm not "hacking it apart," as it's already been hacked apart by the looks of it.

The reason why I want to buy a plain cabinet instead of an actual game is because I'm living on a budget. I'm 16, and so I don't exactly have money to burn. To me, putting a game system in a $50 project cabinet is the same as buying the same game in a restored cabinet for a few hundred dollars more.

It's just the cabinet and a few parts, it's not like I'm asking you if I should buy a part-out-able game and rip all the components out by hand.

Thank you, warmachine, for answering my question. I'll be on the lookout for a 19" CRT.

Goger5454 has done a few. He did a cabinet based on one of those systems that plays NES SNES and Genesis.

There was an Xbox converted to JAMMA for sale on here a few months back as well. I don't know if the seller was the one who built it, however. But it was posted in the console section.

First of all if you use an arcade Monitor its not going too work with consoles. Most arcade games would look strange/funny with a Normail tv in them.

I really don'nt know how you would do the controls. You've talking about taking the cp off. That should'nt be too hard to do. What are you putting in it's place?

I'm using a normal TV hooked up to the TV outputs on the console. If you didn't notice, the cabinet doesn't have an arcade monitor.

I plan on using one of those fighting-style joystick/button controllers in place of the current CP.
