Newbie mistake - Which direction should this chip be installed?

I made a rookie mistake when I was working on my Joust sound board; when I removed one of the two socketed chips, I did NOT note the position of one of the chips (IC9).

Anyone know if this is the correct position as shown below? ALL the other chips are in the same position and I'm 95% certain that this is correct.

Thanks and I'll pay closer attention next time!

I don't know if I've seen a board yet where the ICs are oriented in different positions.... There might also be some kind of marking on the socket itself. You can also follow the traces to the pins in the schematics if you want to be ultra mega super sure.

Notches in the chips all line up the same direction on Williams boards. Usually there is an indication in the socket (except for the white ones where the cross pieces tend to break off and get lost).

I don't think I have ever noticed a chip go in reverse direction to all the rest..

when in doubt, find a pcb pic online. crazykong has pics of many boards..

I've always wondered - what would be the consequence of backward chip (newbie question too). Would only that chip die or would it take out others?

I think only that chip dies, and it's because (most likely) you're feeding voltages to places where they don't belong. this could be especially problematic on a Williams board, because they use +5, +12 and -5 lol
