Newbie here...Just bought my first two games...Opinions/Help?

Hey guys...I just bought 2 systems from a buddy and I'm totally new to this. I have a PlayChoice 10 and a Prisoners of War game...I'm including several pics.

The PC10 cabinet is kinda rough and the bottom monitor doesn't work. (Just a faint red line down the center of the screen.) The games, however, play fine on the top screen...It includes Super Mario Bros 1 & 2, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Double Dragon, Kung Fu, Contra, Rad Racer, Ninja Gaiden 2, Pro Wrestling and Rush'n Attack.

The P.O.W. cabinet is in really decent shape and the graphics are actually quite nice...The game itself isn't playable, though, because blocks are appearing on the screen. (As you can see in one of the pics.) The controls and sound work, but the monitor doesn't cooperate.

Being new to this, I really have no idea where to start...I'm 32 years old and have always loved these old games. I hoped to buy something restored someday, but the chance came along to buy these two games at a low price and I jumped it.

So what do you think?

Great first games! Id love to have a PC10 to go alongside my Punch Out.

Welcome to the end of your garage as you know it.

First thing to do is start looking for a bigger house. FAST

OH and welcome

I'll second that. Welcome to the addiction.
Congrats on getting a PC10 with a Ninja Gaiden 2 in it. It's a more rare title that a lot of people want.
Do a search on here for PC10 restorations. It will give you some good information.

For your POW, it isn't your monitor that is bad. It's the game board.

All I can say is browse around these forums and look at restore threads. This is where you start to learn about the ins and outs of what you just got yourself into. :D You can also search your games on here and you may run into people who have had similar problems that were able to solve it through really savvy people here. Love many of the KLOV folks here who are really cool and helpful. I've scored many parts, cabs and sold what I didn't need on here. Just sit back and explore and don't rush anything.... research and double check.

Thanks guys! I've always wanted to own some arcade games, but this deal came along unexpectadly...Last week, I mentioned how I missed some of the old Nintendo games and my buddy told me he had these sitting around...He offered me the pair for 100 bucks, so I couldn't say no.

The P.O.W. game was working fine before the ride the to my place, so evidently something happened along the way.

Funny,I was playing my PC 15 minutes ago(contra) and POW is one of my first cabs,i cant tell you how many times my son and his friends beat POW but it was ALOT!!!

Congrats, on the new games.
I start, by check voltages on all of the test points.
A line down the screen is a vertical or horizontal collapse.
Search the forums on that.

Good luck.

Man, I'd forgotten how much I love the old Nintendo stuff...Contra is a classic...I've been loving Punch-Out today, too.

Carefully reseat the socketed chips on the game board. Its very possible one is just loose/dirty.

$100 for the pair is a DAMN nice score. Congrats again!

Out of curiosity, what's an educated guesstimate as to what these games are worth as they sit?

Wow, I can't believe how fast the tips are coming in LATE on a Saturday night...I really appreciate it!

So what do you think?

Old games do not like to be moved.
Since it was working before the move I would think its a loose cable or chip.
Press down on all of the socketed chips. You can even use a small flat head screw driver and CAREFULLY raise the chips a little and press them back down.
I like to press on the connectors or wiggle them while watch the screen (with a mirror) and see if the screen changes or corrects itself.

I would have to guess the PC10 is worth a helluva lot more than POW. Personally I'd fix up the POW, sell it for a couple hundred OBO, and use that money to fund repairs on the PC10. I would say the PC10 has got to be worth at least a few hundred even with a blown monitor, and what you are describing by the way sounds like a vertical collapse issue. But the true value on those PC cabs usually depends on what games are included. Sounds like you got a good selection though.

Like Drewster said, on the POW start with reseating chips (making sure you don't bend any pins or place any in backwards). Otherwise make sure there isnt a bad or loose wire, and make sure you're getting the proper voltages at the edge connector.

pow is a great cab. Its 2 player jamma with 3 buttons. Monitor is normally wells k7000 and is easy to fix and rotate. As for what thy are worth, POW is probably not worth much. Maybe $200-$400. It much more useful as a jamma cab. you can play pretty much anyting in it. So pic your favorite game and make it into that.

I don't know PC10 prices, but I think it depends on the carts in it. Some rare carts might be worth more than the whole game. Once you fix it, its probably worth $500-$600+.

I have that same Dynamo cab that POW is in, and just turned it into a 60 in 1. That would be a great first cab, and you would get tons of playtime on it.

The blocks on the POW screen could be a loose chip on the board considering it happened in the move. I had this happen with my Gauntlet 2. GENTLY press down on the chips one by one and see if that fixes it when you turn it back on. You will notice some of the chips are "seated" into place aka removeable. these are your RAM and ROM chips, one of them could be just popped up enough to cause this problem?

Well you guys were right, it was just a loose chip! It's looking good now. Thanks a ton.

Now I have another newbie question: How do I set this thing to free play?
