NEW Williams Power Supply - What do you guys think

I'm a big fan of part hoarding for a machine i fancy. Better to have too many parts than not enough as these darn machines tend to break right before parties and such.

LMAO!

For that kind of money I would kiss you and give you a pack of condoms.

It does come with a 1 year warranty on the $20 switching power supply.

Did you notice that there is no mention that your coin door lights will no longer work and none of your control panel controls will work either because there is no ground?

You would have to leave the old linear ps in place and hooked up to the transformer for the coin door lights to work and to have any controls.

"Just plug the power supply in" and you are good to go. Meaning, plug it into the service outlet that has power as long as the game is plugged in to the wall. So when you turn the game off it still plays blind.

My old power supply is working fine but I would like to prevent problems before they occur if possible....

Personally I wouldn't put a switcher in a game unless I absolutely had to. (e.g. if a cab was missing the original supply) Judging by the pics in your other thread, you have a working and complete original power supply. I think you'd cause more problems then you'd solve putting a switcher in there.

If you really must, I would just get a regular arcade switcher and either the arcadeshop or Bob Roberts adapter. Then do as Dokert suggested for the coin door lights, or route 5V from the switcher through the fused 6.3V signal on the linear PCB.

Isn't there a ground to the interface board in the control panel connector?

Apart from the ridiculous price, the power supply is an integral part of the cabinet and should be restored if possible to make it reliable again.

If it's completely missing, this is a good alternative but I see no reason for it because your PSU was already working fine.

C'mon guys, besides the $3 per chip for 4164 chips you get to enjoy the fun and aggravation of mysterious reboots, random loss of high scores and having your settings reset. It's a bargain at that price.

This guy has been selling these "packages" to unsuspecting victims for at least the last 2 years. According to his listing, he has sold over 600 of these since 1999. So he is either really slow at building harnesses or finding suckers.

Didn't you read his listing?

If your game has been experiencing such problems as intermittent resetting, frequent component or RAM failures, your not alone! It's a problem that is all to common with the older Williams games and the culprit is the power supply unit and 4116 RAMs.
There are several problems with the original Power Supply units, they are nearly 20 years old, their components have drifted out of spec, are unstable, and the connectors have become intermittent and need to be replaced.

You are sitting on a ticking time bomb. It's time to panic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:lmao:

I converted my defender back to the original linear by buying a dead PS on ebay and getting a rebuild kit for it. Don't recall off hand how much I spent but I'm sure it was way less than that!

Now I finally know where these hacked up turds are coming from.:D

Your game is not playing blind, it is just turned off with one of these hacked into it.

Just my 2 cents

I had reset problems on my (switcher-saddled) Robotron, and believe me, the problem was the switcher. I had to adjust that POS every couple weeks to keep it at 5 Volts!

Anyway, I bought a tested power supply board from YellowDog, replaced the IDC connectors with new connectors and pins, and it runs like a champ. Even with those awful original RAMs :) Total cost was far less than 80 bucks!

Just another vote for restoring the machine to it's original glory, and a testament to YellowDog's fine work.

He says the original power supplies are nearly 20 years old....... so that means they were made in the early 90's. Everybody knows those early 90's defenders are ticking time bombs.

I remember playing Defender when it came out back in the early 90's. Street Fighter II had just came out, and there was a lot of hype about Williams new game, then THERE IT WAS, with those nice line drawn graphics that were so state of the art in the early 90's.

Then the Atari version came out! I couldn't figure out why they were making it for a 15 year old system, but man it was great...
