New to The Forum

Welcome to the forum and the hobby! There are tons of great, super helpful people on here,so you picked a great forum to join!

As some have said, if you are just wanting a quick start and don't want to spend a lot of time learning how to repair games then you can get in quickly and, perhaps, be more happy by spending money on games that have already been restored or at least fixed up.

Well, this seems to me to be one of those hobbies where the worst possible position to be in is to have a 'complete' game room. The fun part is acquiring/fixing up/getting something working/putting in new black light carpet/whatever.

I suppose I *could* just buy a completely restored working game... but then I'd miss out on hunting for the perfect marquee or whatever.

Phrenzy, you already know too much and fit in too much to not have an avatar...

Here, maybe this? Frenzy from Transformers?

My current dilemma is that I own/live in a 2nd story condo with no elevator. How does one lift a 450+ Lbs cabinet up a flight of stairs?

I suppose an alternative is to rent a small space somewhere. lol

with a thing like mine:

So you might be asking yourself "What does this have to do with arcade games?" Well, on the upper floor of this facility is a room called "The Taj Lounge" which houses several fully restored, free play arcade and pinball machines. I managed to wander up there during the wine tasting, located Centipede and played for about two hours. A flood of my childhood memories came rushing back. Suddenly I realized... "Hey, I could have MY OWN game room!"

I fear this may be a long, expensive and time-consuming couple of decades. lol

Anyway, pleased to make your acquaintance!

You hooked now baby, ain't no comming back after this :)

I've learned a lot from this site in just the 3 months I have been in the hobby. My first game in March was a Neo Geo 4 slot that had a bad conversion to a 48-1 that I paid $350 for. I have fixed a lot of hackwork on it (replaced monitor, joysticks, speakers, painted) and now have it in reasonable condition, but I overpaid.
My second was a dedicated Neo Geo 4 slot that I picked up for $200 with 4 carts. It needs new EL panels and a new memory car board, but overall is a solid been out in the wild style game. I discovered that they make multi carts for it and have had a lot of fun with my 120-1. My third game is a Make Trax cocktail that had a scrambled screen that the guy delivered to my house for $75. I drilled out the locks and got it working the same night (with help from here), and the overall condition of the game is really good. I managed to snatch that one from Craigslist because they didn't list it as an arcade game, which is very rare to do in this area with all of the collectors around. I've recently discovered that certain local auctions have games from time to time, as well as local yard sales.
I've come to the point where I have been saying "If I can move this here, I can fit another game in." I have several titles I want from when I was a kid. My wife and I plan to buy another house sometime next year and her concession has been that it has to have a basement that is all mine, she can do whatever she pleases with the rest of the house.

You will fit in just fine here. Welcome.

Check out my VAPS link. All those games are working and in my basement. I started collecting less than 2 years ago.

Sometimes buying a working game is the best way to go. $100 games turn into $700 games quick if they need art, PCB repair, new monitors, etc...Trust me you will still find something to fix.

The video on that site is the best thing ever. I love the Dallas/Knotts Landing theme music. Hahaha I bet the rental place up the street from me has one of those.

WELCOME I've been a member about 6 months now. I started looking for 1 game now i have aver 40 and still looking for more. You know your hooked when you post gonna get 1 more game and your done. Then 50 or so people reply to you "YEA RIGHT" . Locate your local rehab before it's to late. Good luck

Now I have discovered MAME, HyperSpin and HyperPin. Wow... some of these cabinets people are building are the tits! (excuse the expression)

I had an idea. I could use 3 small 7" LCDs in a MAME cabinet to create a digital marquee, that (probably with a lot of coding) could display a virtual marquee of the selected game. Woah.

WeLcOmE! You have picked the best forum out to join. Your enthusiasm is refreshing......your defiantly hooked already. :)

Just be careful with mame... There's good and bad. Lotta hellcades out there, with huuuuuuuuuge aircraft-carrier sized control panels.

Don't be that guy!

Hahahahahah... I've noticed that already and thought "why on earth is the control panel 4 meters across?"

The other thing with mame is a lot of the games dont work right, especially the ones that use trackballs. The timing and sync just always feels off.
