I guess it has been a long time coming, I seem to be jumping into the vintage computing hobby, my latest purchase is an Amiga 1000 computer, loose (and the only one I've seen locally).

I am doing a lot of reading, my first step is to crack it open and reseat all of the socketed chips.

I am missing a keyboard, mouse...well everything. It uses a standard PC power cord and it looks like I can either use RF or composite out to see what it does.

I have a few 1.44MB floppies around, but I believe this takes 800K disks, and requires a boot floppy for the Workbench OS.

Any Amiga fans out there willing to give some words of wisdom?

I have an Amiga 4000 Toaster lying around somewhere..... Let me dig through my stuff and see what I can find and remember. It has been a long time....

Slight update since my first post:
The computer has the front RAM expansion and it outputs color composite in stereo, so one of my old 4:3 LCD TVs works well as a monitor. It boots to a screen for the Kickstart disc that I do not have, but, progess!

What are my options for a keyboard and or mouse? The keyboard connector appears to be identical to a telephone. Is the mouse custom also, or will any 2 button serial mouse work?

I was hoping making the Kickstart and Workbench floppy discs would be easy, but this seems to be a big problem. Research says I need to find someone that has the discs already and is willing to mail me copies. No word on the games, but I do see that the developer Factor5 made a lot of their Amiga software free, notably the port of R-Type!

I'm not certain about the Amiga 1000, but AtariAge has a very active classic computing section. I'm into the TI 99/4a myself and it has a pretty active subforum there. I know several of the other vintage computers have sections as well.

That helps a lot, I have joined an official Amiga forum but my account is too new and I can't post yet. I'll run off and make an account there too.

The facebook group is a friendly place too: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CommodoreAmiga/

I owned a 1000 and now a suped up 500. The 1000 is limiting in its compatibility with running european software (games, demos) at 50Hz for most software. There are ways to get some demos & games working on the 1000 in 50Mhz mode (given that you have the necessary memory upgrade), but in the end you're going to hit a lot of brick walls. But you should be able to get going with that system.

AFAIK you need to hunt down an A1000 keyboard for that. Any Amiga mouse will work.

Yes, I do anticipate 25%-50% of the games will not run properly on my system due to low RAM or the 50/60Hrtz region refresh rates, but this is my first Amiga so I am obviously excited. My choice of monitor is also the worst possible option, but it will do for now. I still don't know if the floppy is still good or if it will run a single game. Nostalgia and availability of the hardware clearly got the better of me when I bought it.

As long as one of the Turricans, R-Types, or Cannon Fodder make the list I will be happy. There is so much software available; this best list site I have found at least lets me sort by Original Chip Set (OCS) to narrow compatibility down for this early NTSC unit. I have read motherboard revisions also matter...a lot to learn about.

Thanks for the tip on the keyboard/mouse. I hope I can work out something with a friendly Amiga enthusiast that has some extra floppies/time/hardware.
