New to emulation/mame questions

Getting crt-emudrivers setup is not nearly as hard to do as it seems like based on trying to find information about it. It's pretty damn simple. You can get compatible graphics cards for like $15 on ebay. You can also setup a PC that is powerful enough to run those games for pretty cheap too, you don't need top of the line anything for it. You can use like 15+ year old hardware for it and it'll run those games just fine.

If you go the PC route get a J-PAC to interface with the PC. You'll also need an amp for your speakers, but you can get a cheap one that is like $10. I have 2 of em in my 2 MAME cabinets. I had to get more expensive ones for my Rush 2049 cabinets though since there is a sub involved, but even those were $20 lol it's not expensive.
Cant you just use a vga to cga converter? I know they make them or do they not work well?

I mean the cga to vga china numba 1 gbs 8200 works just fine

Use this in regards to what though?
A pc, the j-pac, and a crt monitor… vga out from PC into converter cga out Into sync wires of CRT. My goal here is not to run multiple games my goal is to replace a original pcb in an original cabinet and make it do one thing run total carnage, i turn it on total carnage automatically pops up and is capable of being used to take quarters.

Thats it idc if its capable of running other games and idc too much about the cost. The last original total carnage set ive seen on ebay in 5 years went for 900$ and i was really close to buying it lol.

I am a little confused.

I am assuming you want to play Total Carnage without the original PC by emulating it somehow, which would mean you need a PC.

The JPAC allows you to hook your JAMMA connector up to it, run a USB cable to your PC, connect a VGA cable to your PC, and then you can interface the cabinet controls and monitor with your PC.

The VGA to CGA converter thing you mention, which I don't know anything about, won't do anything for actually interfacing with the PC through your cabinet controls.

And just FYI, I believe you can even set it all up to need quarters to work in emulators as well.

How are you confused im going to use a PC right then use the j-pac to handle the controls that uses usb i believe to the PC then vga out of the PC to vga/cga converter to the crt ?

Where did i say im not going to use a PC?

i think someone mentioned there is an option that maybe does everything i want all in one.

Reread i guess you lost me to why I need crtemu drivers?

You need a specific type of graphics card to be able to flash the bios to run CRTemudriver in order to run all these games in their native resolution.
The vga out off your motherboard is not going to do what you want it to.

The sync wires are on the JAMMA harness and the JPAC has a VGA plug on it - I don't understand why you would want to introduce another piece of hardware with the converter and that is what I am confused about, but you do you.

You need the crt-emudrivers to run Windows and MAME in standard resolution at the right refresh rate.

Ahh i did not realize that i think i was looking at the wrong mame thing. I see that, perfect. I think understand, tell windows what I want the monitor resolution to be and the refresh rate and there is no need for a converter. I guess i forgot that Windows could do that for some reason. Thank you, apologies i did not mean to come off as a dick 😂 as i said I understand classic jamma etc emulation is new to me. No I agree the less hardware the less room for unintended problems. Never used a JPAC looked more into that yep thats a one and done.

I figured you weren't aware of how the graphics driver worked.
Like Drew says, it really isn't that hard to get going.
I made my life with that really easy and found a card with the right chipset and both DVI and VGA out so that I can have a monitor still live no matter what happens during flash, output transfer, and configuration.
I can have a look to see what ones I used if you are curious.
In the meantime, read up on Calamity's video work!

No problem I was just legit confused as to what that was for.

You also will need to run a fork of MAME called GroovyMAME. It's super easy to setup.

The first 2 threads in this forum below are basically all you need to get going.

EDIT:

This is the most recent video card I got for my 2nd setup that uses crt-emudrivers - it was only $12 shipped from eBay.

Thank you and @purbeast i will do that. Might have more questions let me get closer to where i need the software help side. What I have is a midway universal cab, they made a few and i forget the model numbers, but the ones I have are exact copies of mk1 and total carnage. I will probably route it as I do everything and if the FBI wants to kick my door down for a "free storage" game I put in laundromat or what have you and made a few quarters on so other people can enjoy it then so be it 😅

Somewhere I have a post of an mk1 i did similar, i just cannot find a Total Carnage board set
