Hello everyone, I am new here, and just got interested in arcades. I don't know a whole lot about them, trying to figure out some stuff by reading this forum. Anyways, I just recently acquired a sit down Off-Road Challenge. When I turn it on the lights come on and the screen comes up, and the system beeps(well almost honks)every now and then. The screen has what I have read to be garbage on it. I can't play blind either. I was hoping someone could help me diagnose and fix it. I have attached some pics below with what the screen, internals, and lights are showing. Please let me know if anything looks out of place to you. And please forgive me if I have stated something wrong with it, as I really hae no idea what I am doing. Just trying to learn. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Well I pulled off the ribbons and looked where the red stripe is, and there was a number one on both boards. So I am assuming that is the pin 1. So would that mean that the ribbons are right?

I can't be real sure but I think you have a ribbon cable backwards and you need to verify all of the red stripes (on ribbon cables) are going to pin 1 on each end.

looks like it, but I can't tell the numbers on the mainboard side. not familiar with that boardset.. you'll see numbers next to the ribbon cable header, as said, always align the cable with the red stripe on the 1/2 pin sides and you can at least rule that out.

if you wanna get into the thick of this stuff, I can tell you everything you need to know to get started. I strongly encourage you have a digital multimeter, cause we're going to need to check DC voltages, it looks like your game isn't booting at all. I don't know what that other board with the ribbon cable is, but I'm thinking that's the steering wheel driver board right?

Yeah, I just double checked again, and the red stripe is on the 1/2 pin at each header. I'm not for sure on what the other board is, it does have a couple of wires running froom the steering mechanism to it though. I do have a digital multimeter, but I haven't really used it, lol. Just bought it figuring one day I would use it. Guess no better time than now. So I may need assistance on making sure what I'm doing. Thanks for your help so far.

It is the bottom ribbon cable at the main board I want you to re check.

EDIT:

Usually all ribbon cables all go same direction (red to left or red to right) from main board. NOT always though.

system16.com says this is the Midway Quicksilver II hardware... PC-based.

does that bottom cable go to a hard drive?

could just be me but in this pic it looks like that red trace on the ribbon is opposite the 1/2 ( I do have glasses and you did say they're all in the correct position). Steering feedback controller (mecha helped id that)

oh yeah, definitely not on 1/2. I don't reckon that would cause the game to not boot though. if anything it should come up with an error, not a white screen.

white screen could be power supply voltage too low/high, or roms need to be reseated.

my thoughts as well about causing it not to boot, but with these damn games it wouldn't surprise me either.

I don't see anything that looks like a hard drive. Are you talking about the wires going straight down? If so they go into something that is on the powersupply. If you need a pic, I can get it for you. I also took a pic of the location of the pin 1/2, that you are referring to. I do believe the ribbon is on right, but I could be wrong. Here is the pic.

It was on their correctly. It was the first two digits from 19 and 20 that looked like a 1 and 2 in your previous picture that made it look like it was on backwards.

yup, definitely need these glasses :D sorry what are your voltages like at the power supply?

Ok, this is where I start needing help, lol. How do I go about checking the voltages at power supply? I do have a digital multimeter, and I have played with it a little, but no expert.

can you post a pic of the other end of that cable and the connector and the other ribbon just below that<?

OK the first pic is the other end of the ribbon that I already pcitured. The second picture is of the other ribbon showing the #1 by the red stripe. The third pic is of the poser supply I suppose.
Mecha, I did get your PM, I don't have anything to IM with. This post or PM is the best way to get ahold of me. I read your voltage testing page. I am assuming the green wires are going to grounding. But I don't have any other pole for power. And I am not for sure on what you mean by molex plug. If you look at the wires on right of ppower supply there is a group of wires that run out of ps to a plug, is that it? Or could I just probe one of the red wires and get a reading?

They are correct :). If you look inside most desktop pc's they almost always point the same direction and that is what caught my eye.

I would look at u125 and test, looks like a burn spot on the chip between pins 4 and 5.

Them surface mounts right next to r765 look cooked to me and should also be tested.

if you follow the power supply wires, it should go to a white 9 pin plug. that's the molex connector I speak of. the pointy part on the top of it will have a row of 3 red wires, below that will be a row of 3 black wires. the reds are the +5, black are the grounds. meter there. follow that to the JAMMA harness plugged into the board. grab another reading at the red and black wires there (it'll be 2 black wires at the top, then 2 red wires, use either set of each), you have to really stick the meter into the holes. losing much power through the wires?

then check the voltage at the security chip, it's the small chip with a white label that will say OFFROAD CHALLENGE and has a bar code on it. refer to my thread for that. monitor the voltage drop between the JAMMA harness and this, report the numbers to me. if it's a significant drop, I know how to correct that too.

you of course have to get these readings with the machine on. so be careful you don't slip and hit your meter probes in places they don't belong.
