So I ordered the smooth red t-molding from Twisted Quarter for my Gaplus and my Virtual Boy project. Turns out that the red was a deeper red than what was originally on Gaplus, but it you would never notice once installed.

If you care for it to be accurate on your Gaplus I would suggest that you intall the bright red from t-molding.com

Anyway it still looks a million times better with the new t-molding. But now I want to get a new control panel overlay. I don't think anyone makes a reproduction, I hate to have to make my own, it isn't fun, and I already had to make the marquee.

Here is the old t-molding, yes it was all broken like that:

how bad was severing the spine?

I assume you are talking about notching the spine while I was installing the new molding. It was very easy. The new molding is very soft, and I was cable to cut it with a utility knife. Did you see the VB with the molding installed? That looks phenomenal!

they both look phenomenal, i haven't attempted the same feat on my machines as i've never done it and don't wanna mess up cutting a notch wrong. I'm sure i'm just acting like a sissy and need to put the big pants on and just do it lol.

My gaplus had the same problem with the original tmolding, it was disintegrating as I was removing it! It looked a hundred times better after the new stuff got put on!

You sure are! It is super easy wuss! :D

Looks good. I need to replace mine, it pretty much looks just like your before shots. I'd probably go for the lighter red one, if that is indeed the correct one. Looks good though, even with the darker red. Mine is faded to pink, so either one would be an improvement ;)

The bright red is described as the same color as a HAPP red button, which is closer to the original color. The original on my is slightly faded as well.

Looks great! Wondering why the hell the original t-molding was all cut up into pieces like that when it was installed. Strange!

I don't know if you are joking, but it wasn't like that when it was new.

Does it crack over time or something? I'm referring to this pic:

Or maybe someone just did a bad install job at one point? Never seen t-molding installed in "pieces" like that before.

The t-molding on my Gaplus looks identical to that, so it wasn't just a one-off bad installation. It just got brittle and broke I guess. I know mine is just flakes off in pieces if I try to pull it out of the slot.

The plastic breaks down, gets brittle, etc...

The t-molding that came on Gaplus is not the same material that is on most cabinets. The plastic is much thicker, and the profile is flat, not domed. Also the plastic is harder and a different material. I think that is why it cracked over time.

Interesting! Never seen that before (thought I am relatively new to the hobbby). Thanks guys.
