new stern facebook teaser pic

Why would my argument over new players be invaild?

Because theme alone is not going to bring any new players to pinball. Not in my opinion, anyway. Especially when Star Wars is already a very kid friendly theme. I'm just not sold on the idea that a Justin Beiber machine is going to have kids going crazy over pinball.

Isn't that the goal of most companies is to attract as many customers as possible?

That's exactly what they're doing. Harry Potter is cool on a t-shirt but in pinball Star Wars is a better theme. Are there better? Probably. Is Stern going to make money on this pin if they build it? Definitely.

It seems you would have to get NEW customers to make this happen?

A Star Wars pinball will sell a ton of units and attract the interest of plenty of new players.

It will sell units it will NOT atract any new players.

I sense a great disturbance in the force ............

If Stern does this, I will be broke and divorced.......

We'll all have to form a club or something...

I said that my Tron would probably be the only NIB pin I'd ever buy. Having bought one and loving every minute of it, I can see doing it again with a theme I really like.

Having said that, where the $$'s would come from is another issue. I guess I could sell a kidney? Is that legal?

Tom

That's a great point. My parents were into other things and I followed that and so did my brothers and sisters. I just don't know how many star wars fans actually got girls to sleep with them?

at least one. and i got the kids to prove it. ;)

Nerds generally mate with other nerds. They don't get cheerleaders in high school or have threesomes with groupies on their tour bus but they definitely meet other nerds, settle down and procreate. Star Wars also transcends nerds. But... I'm sure you were just trying to be funny so... HAHAHA!!1

I really was trying to be funny but it is a legit question.

i said that TRON would probably be my only NIB purchase...i mean, i would love a transformers, but it's just coming out too quickly on the heels of TRON. i can't come up with the scratch that fast.

but a new star wars pin? ummm....yes, please.

i called the wifey a little while ago and said:

me: "i got some bad news."

wifey: "what is it?"

me: "they're coming out with a new star wars pin."

wifey: "ohhhhhhhh greeeeaaaaaatttt..... <rolling her eyes, i'm sure>

she knows i gotta have this one if it comes out (and in talking with a buddy of mine at marco today, he seems pretty convinced it's going to). i just have no idea where we're gonna get the money....i'm hoping that this one is a late 2012 release.

and 40 year old men are buying pinballs not kids.

Never said they wouldn't sell just that it wasn't going to be drawing any new players at arcades etc. Maybe that's all that matters is selling pins now since the Best buy announcement that would make sense. I just think that a more universal and current theme would be beneficial in the way of drawing kids back to arcades?

First let me state that the term "players" is used as a blanket statement.
And you think that Stern releasing an AC/DC pin will attract new players? Do you really think releasing pins themed after ANY movie is creating new players? My speculative answer is it doesn't matter what theme is used. Pinball is only alive because of the last two generations and will most likely last one more due to the people who have them and get their kids involved.

Seriously - I love pinball but the blatant truth of the matter is that pinball is the SAME freaking thing it has been for years. Batting a freaking ball around on a table. Times have changed and kids need more than that to get/keep them interested. There has been jack SQUAT for innovation in pinball and with that lack of innovation will come pinballs demise.
The big picture is this (blqanket statement) . OP's can't afford to buy new machines due to the initial purchase price. Now add the decreasing player base and a perosn can't justify the extra expense either. Now add the typical 50/50 split .... pinballs future doesn't look so bright anymore now does it? I "people watch" when I'm hanging out with my kids and kids will play everything around them BUT the pinball machine/s. And these kids KNOW what the pinball machine theme is - they don't care. So a person claiming or thinking that a theme will generate new blood ... well I have to strongly disagree there. Until there is MAJOR innovation/change to pinball it is destined to fail as a whole. My .02

I now see what I am dealing with.......

What's that exactly?

How is a 30 year old theme gonna bring NEW players? They missed the last 400 star wars games?

Oh I don't know... maybe when their dad takes them to the theater to see the new releases of the movies and introduces the kid to pinball. That's one of a million scenarios.

Introducing new players is one thing but alienating the existing market of pinball buyers wouldn't be the most brilliant money making strategy.

Star Wars is still a relevant theme today. If it were not I wouldn't see it all over everything.

FYI: They probably missed the last 400 games because they were not born yet.
