New Project: Tetris Cabaret

Nah, the shorter Nintendo and Asteroids cabs are to the far right because there is a window behind them. If anything, I'll just swap the Robotron and Tetris.
This looks sweet, my only suggestion would be to move Tetris one to the left and pull robotron out into my basement. Now that would look awesome!!! 😂

Tetris is great and I like the play concept on the atari arcade version. However, I think it was a failure to only have one rotation button. I dont know if nintendo innovated that, but when I play the arcade version it seems missing.
OK, I just wanna verify, I've been playing this game quite a bit lately and I do believe the action buttons 1 and 2 do in fact rotate the piece in the opposite directions. 1 rotates it to the left and 2 rotates it to the right.

OK, I found the only two pictures I ever took of the game that inspired this conversion/build and I guess I was wrong, this was at MGC not the 2-D Con in the Twin Cities, and it was on November 6, 2021 that I played it. I did end up putting a bid in the auction, but I didn't win. Crazy that I didn't take a picture of the whole machine.

Just wanted to say that I played the 'inspiration' Tetris game at MGC almost exactly 4 years ago. I missed the anniversary date by a day. Kind of cool to see that I was able to make this happen just in 4 years. Usually something like this would have taken me 15 or more years or it may have never happened.

Ill check mine again. You are using jamma button 1 and 2?

Yes. I looked in the manual, it only shows button 1 even listed on the pin out. So when I hooked up button number 2 and it also rotated the piece, I was a little surprised, but obviously it's mapped for that action. As I push each button, it seems the piece is rotating in opposite directions.

What gets me is if the button was mapped for this function, why isn't it mentioned in the manual? And why wouldn't someone hook the other button up when converting a game just to see if it worked, especially if there's a second button available? I think because the manual doesn't mention it, most people just hooked up the one button and were done with it. I only hooked the second button up because I was gonna fill the other slot with a 19 in 1 running Solomon's key. I'm just really glad to know that it works this way.

Seriously, who tries to play Tetris with only one rotate button? Who would even think of it? 🤣

Had you never played Tetris on any other platform? Or had it just been so long that you forgot? I get the omission in the manual, but it still boggles the mind.

You must not have read this whole thread I take it.

This fellow brought it up way back when I started the build. I've been posting the second button updates for him.

Mike wasn't the only person to mention the opposite rotation button ya know!

Right and then when it was mentioned, someone said that both buttons rotate the piece in the same direction. At the time I wasn't sure, but now that I played it a bunch I am. Each button rotates the piece in the opposite direction, just as god intended.

Yeah. I did. I was holding off while you did more important things. And then somebody else brought it up so I didn't feel the need. But now that the problem is (finally) solved you'd better believe I'm going to give you a hard time! I might as well say check the green wire while I'm at it! 😛

I only knew about the rotation thing from the horribly done Data East to jamma Tetris conversion I got that looked like R2-D2 threw up in it.
Was a while before I sorted out what was happening with the stupid buttons.
Glad to hear you got this one set up properly.
Looks nice too of course!

You know it's fun to also switch it up to columns now and then, but that game gets pretty old and repetitive really quick. I hate to say it, but my mind can only handle so many rearrangements of the sparkly gems before I just lose interest. I think it's time to find another puzzle game to put in here. It's gotta have a small footprint like Tetris, maybe the Mickey's magical Tetris is the way to go. Or if there was a way to get Dr. Mario onto a small Jamma board. I've already established that I just don't have the room for a KLAX board in this little cabinet.

I will check mine again, because I was pretty certain it was only flipping in one direction. However, I made my tetris cabinet support blockout which uses four buttons. It is possible I was pressing button 1 and 3 or something like that when I tested because the order for blockout is kinda strange.

To add to the button confusion, Klax only uses one button yet the control layout is pretty much the same as Tetris, with the "flip/start" button(s) on both sides of each joystick. @CarrieZ has a Tetris PCB and we were planning on throwing a 2in1 switcher in her Klax cabaret (in which case, I'm planning to sell my Tetris cabinet I've got in storage in MN.) But knowing the button lore l, thanks to Shawn, I'm going to have to think it over a little and come up with a solution for the second button.
