New project! Original Gauntlet converted to High Impact Football

You should swap out the roms with the ones for Low Impact Football
This made me crack up. :D

Put it up on ebay at a bro price and use the money to buy a Gauntlet II. Everybody wins!
What's a good bro price? Btw, I like Gauntlet II, but not anymore than the original Gauntlet. Am I weird like that?

Thank you all for your opinions! I'm still on the fence about it. Does anyone have an idea as to how I can safely test to see if the artwork for Gauntlet is underneath? Without destroying anything. That may help me decide.

look at it at an angle and see if you can see the sticker underneath first. I would then use my fingernail and see if you can scratch off the black paint. if it looks like it will come off, Then I think try some citrus strip on it. I have only tried to remove paint once on a crystal castles. It was not acrylic paint, so it was doable.

I was thinking about this on the way home (I have a long drive). Unless you're in it for flipping and money, do a little daydreaming. Imaging walking into your gameroom and seeing either game. Which one makes you feel like a kid in an arcade, brings a smile to your face and makes you proud to own.

That helps me avoid unnecessary purchases while I work on my short list. :)

Thank you for the advice! I'll see if I can see any outlines from multiple angles first. Then, I'll do the finger nail test.

I have a fully functional Gauntlet 2 PCB if you do the conversion back to the Gauntlet.
:)
Awesome! I'll keep you posted.

This is a really good tip. HIF is quite a bit of fun and works perfectly. Gauntlet is a completely different game but so much fun in its own way.

How about a third option?

Either keep it as a HIF or restore it back to a Gauntlet, but use a JAMMA set-up with a multi-JAMMA adapter (game specific adapters), so you can play both games. Since it's already converted, it's not really a sin to convert it once again or only partially restore it to Gauntlet.

Now, obviously I love Gauntlet and already voted for a full and complete Gauntlet (or Gauntlet II) restoration, but if you love both games, are limited on space, etc., then maybe this third option has some value to you.

That's not a bad idea! Though, I believe HIF is mono and Gauntlet is stereo (I could be mistaken). Will something like that cause any issues?

Gauntlet Marquee.

I have the speaker grille section for a gauntlet that was converted to a Crime Fighters that I did peel the art off to reveal the original gauntlet stuff. I'd send it to you for the cost of shipping if you want it.

Will take a pic later and update this post with it if you are interested.

The issue with Gauntlet isn't that you can keep continuing, it's that you HAVE to put quarters in it, I've never seen anyone "beat" the game on one quarter. You life starts ticking down as soon as you start. Sure you can get items that fill your life, but it was made to be a quarter eater.

Those Konami beatmups like TMNT you can put one quarter in it and beat it.

That's awesome! I'm definitely interested. I'll keep an eye out for the pic! :)

You're totally right on that. Don't get me wrong, I would have taken a TMNT over this cab (regardless of what game is in it) any day. I LOVE that game. It's just nearly impossible to find one, and at the price for which I got HIF with delivery, I couldn't beat it.

I am definitely torn on this cab. HIF is fun (and I'm not usually a sport game kind of guy), but I absolutely love the artwork of the original Gauntlet. It is just so awesome. I guess we'll see where the path leads me. My focus right now is Millipede, with the occasional break to play HIF. :D So, there is a chance that I'll move HIF into the games room without doing much, just for the time being. The cab is so clean. There is barely even any dust in the back of the cab even though the thing had been living in a storage unit for the past year.

Depends upon how you wire the cabinet, but that's not a big deal at all, so no issues I can think of. Just make sure both speakers are in the cabinet.

Yeah, they're there. 2 - 6x9 speakers. Gotta love Atari slapping those big speakers in a lot of their cabs. I was surprised to see them in a Millipede! Why in the world would a Millipede need 6x9s?? I can understand Gauntlet, the speakers are further away, and it was the first game to incorporate actually decent vocals (other games had attempted it previously with subpar results).

Midway put 6x9 in many games in the golden era.
My previous Asteroids Deluxe cabaret has the typical 6x9, but after getting it and playing a few games, I noticed the sound just wasn't what I remembered. Even turning up the volume didn't help fill-in the missing sounds. My solution was to buy a new set of quality 6x9 speakers (on sale) and install one in the AD. Needless to say, the volume was way too loud, but more importantly the sounds were back! Thump, thump, thump! Definitely need the 6x9. [emoji3]

I rescued my gauntlet years ago from an old sports game and had no regrets in doing so. My art was underneath and was able to reveal it with a bit of citrustrip in a discrete location and then went all out. Internally, in order to save on expenses I kept the JAMMA wiring and just made a JAMMA adapter for the boards (CPU and sound amp). This worked out because I added a double-JAMMA and also run the Simpsons as a switchable game on top of the tricked out gauntlet board that has both gauntlet I and II, so it plays three games total.

Agreed that by itself it doesn't get as much play but I think it's a classic that looks fantastic and gets a lot of attention when I do have people over. Plus I hate sports games generally, lol.

Adding my Gauntlet Dark Legacy/legends machine next to it and they're awesome just to look at IMO.

Good luck with whatever you do.
