New Product Sneak Peak: CoinUp - 1UP (Freeplay for your non-freeplay games)

Super cool. I think you will sell a bunch of these. Will you need one for each coin slot? Or 1 per game is good?

One per game should be fine, unless the game is set up such that a particular coin slot only credits a certain player. I think X-men (4 and 6 players) are like that for example. But they may already have freeplay.

Would it be possible to do the new version and the old version in one utilizing the dip switches?

Not really. The old design sat between the button and the game PCB. This one simply attaches in parallel to the existing button. So the wiring is different (and easier).

Very cool! I'd be in for a few myself.

One question, how does it work for those games that have a, for lack of a better term, a credit theft deterient circuit? Those games that have a special timing associated with the coin drop. The ones that come to mind are Sega vector games.

Just thought I'd ask.
Tom

Good question. Do you have timing specs on this? I can then adjust these guys accordingly to make sure they work.

I too would be interested... but as others have mentioned, price is a concern. I have no idea what it takes to create these but at a $7 - $10 price point they're a no-brainer and I'd be in for a few at least.

the original sold for $20 so i doubt the new version is going to be a whole lot cheaper. but still, compared to many of the game-specific free play kits this is pretty inexpensive and will easily move from game to game as you buy/sell/reorganize.

i'd be down for a bunch if i wasn't already running on tokens, but still i'll probably buy a couple for when i take my games to events or shows as i inevitably seem to have a few without free play and have to do the p2-credit hack.

Price will be key. It was a deterrent on the original for me.
I appreciate the time in something like this but a $20 price point is a bit much for how many people need for their collection.
I've been wiring up buttons that only cost me 50 cents a piece.
I think $10 is the sweet spot on an item like this. At $20 it just isn't worth it for all the machines I have that need it.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think the amount you'd sell at $10 would make up for how many you'd sell at $20.

That's funny because my Sega Star Trek was exactly the game I was thinking of for this. :)

I would be surprised if you could buy the components for $10 - forget about the time taken to design & build them! You could certainly have them made in China and sell for $10 but you would need to order several thousand.....

That's what I was figuring, that since these weren't being ordered in a huge quantity they wouldn't be able to meet said price point.

I imagine these will be priced at $20 or possibly even higher unfortunately.

Same PCB layout and components, just a newer design so I see no reason to raise the price on you guys.

And keep in mind that $20 includes shipping. I.E. you send me $20 and I ship the part to your door.

That would be for 1 board correct? So if you bought 2 or 3 would it be $40.00 and $60.00 respectively or is there a discount for multiple units?

I'll probably do a discount on multiple units. Just need to figure out how many that is. (I.E. How many gets you the discount)

I always had the intention of pricing the CoinUps @ $20 with me eating the shipping costs. Seems easier to convince someone to buy a product that costs $20 than $20 + shipping.

Very cool product! I know that a lot of people will enjoy them.

But, at $20 each, it makes me glad that I decided to use tokens for my gameroom. Token mechs are a lot cheaper (and can be modified from quarter mechs for free).

So was born the CoinUp -1UP which simulates exactly what any person would do if they wanted to play a game: plop a quarter in and press start. I find it to be as close to freeplay as you can get without having to hack the ROMs etc. Works perfect for 1 and 2 starts.
Initial testing shows the device is working flawlessly. Once I feel it's all set to go I'll update here and it will be available for sale on my site.

Very interesting. Just to check I have this straight, so you could have the dip switches set to "1 quarter = 1 play", i.e, for games with freeplay, NOT set on free play, so that they'd show their normal regular attract mode. Then using your device, just press start 1 or start 2 to coin up and start the game?

Would this trip the coin counter too? That would be awesome, a great way to get game party stats on what games were used and how much.

How does this connect without splicing any of the original wiring in the game?

I take it you could use this on pinball games too?

I might be in for a every game in my room.

I assume it keeps adding credits every time someone hits start? Not that it's a big deal, except that if kids keep hitting start, it'll rack up a bunch of credits, which would get rid of the attract mode, and it'd never come back until you turned off the game.

That will be a problem for any hardware freeplay solution.
