I played 1 game of Popeye this morning, and it was the first time I have ever got past the 3rd screen and seen the bouncing skulls. Dudes, I was on fire. I was able to point press on the trampoline and by punching the buzzards and ended up with a new high score of 42,280. Sweet! I am actually getting better. It's cool to be playing my games again and getting excited about them. High Score kits rule. I can see 50 G's in my future. Thanks for sharing in my excitement.

Do you have it set on bonus life on 40K? I have HSS Kit and I'm also of novice level. My high right now is 88K. That's with a lot of point pressing. Focusing on the buzzards and tramp.

Yes, first time I ever earned an xtra guy or heard the xtra guy tone. I lost it seconds later, but at least I earned it in the first place. I actually got to change a score on my menu board this week, and that's all that matters.

Congrats! Only reason I ask, was that I didn't want to see you make it harder on yourself. Pretty sure 40K is factory setting.

I use to get wiped out all the time on the 5th screen. I had to change up my strategy (not sure if it is a better one) from trying to stay on top and collect higher point values for the falling items, to preserving life and point pressing large scoring chances, e.g. thrown bottles, skulls, tramp, buzzard

Once you develop a rhythm it is amazing how quick you can accumulate points and still rescue falling items from water. I guess I should read a strategy guide to figure out the real "right" way to play and then improve on my own score but I kind of like to figure it out on my own.

While I know this game gets a ton of flack, ever since I first purchased the NES port I wanted an arcade version of it. So even though the game is unfairly looked down upon, it was on my must-haves when I got into building my collection.

Thanks for the thread!

Hey! If you like the game, that's all that counts.... Some people look down on the Ms. Pac/Galaga combo, but I just got one a month ago and LOVE it!!! So does the GF... We have competitions on it to beat each other's high scores. It's already provided hours of fun! And nice jobs on the high scores! I'm having a hard time beating my personal best on Frogger (79,000), but it's fun to try while I'm out of work at the moment, LOL!

I love Popeye. I play it 3x as much as DK. DK gets too much press. Time for Popeye lovers to unite and discuss strategies for this stellar game.

I would agree. DK is too linear, with only the rivet screen and I guess the conveyor stage allowing you to roam.

The open boards in Popeye I think allow for a more random game and better replay. Well, unless you pickup the pattern on it too.

My high is 64k was the second cab I ever got. 30 working just needed tmolding and side art. I always get crushed on L2-1. The falling skulls kills my rythm. Bottles and the 4k barrell bonus are key

The artwork and graphics on this game are really pretty sweet. I wish you could punch Bluto more often, but you get to make up for that when you punch buzzards for a G a piece. Post pics of your Popeye cabs if you've got them.

Popeye kicks ass.

I don't remember how I got past some of those boards - Bluto throwing bottles, SeaHag throwing bottles, skulls bouncing at you....it can get pretty crazy. Clearly my hand-eye coordination/speed was way better back then.

It was a highly underrated game BITD. I wonder if it was due to just having the 3 boards.

I need to install my HS kit.

Here are the 2 I've restored:
