New Pinball Manufacturer on the Horizon

I hung out with some pinhead friends yesterday and mentioned that I didn't care for the theme. My buddy's wife says it's perfect...appeals to every generation... I think she's right. :)

If this was going to be a Pin2K, I can only imagine how cool it would be when the wicked witch appears in the game. The more I think about it, the more I like this theme and idea. I think it has massive potential and the hardcore WoO collectors will undoubtedly scoop it up.

I cant believe that people are complaining ALREADY, o wait its KLOV :)
I think anyone who loves something so much to put this kind of effort into an industry that clearly needs the help, should be applauded! I cant wait to see what Jersey Jack can do!

Exactly what I think.
It has a lot of potential to be dark & spooky if they do it right. Flying monkeys, wizard head, living forest. Not to mention the whole Munchkin thing.

Very cool. I hope they succeed in their ventures and if they do, I think a nice mixture of old and new titles would be great. I would love to see a 3 Stooges or Munsters pin someday.

I like what Jack has done for pinball, but the mirrored backglass for LOTR limited edition was awful, IMHO. I hope he isn't using the same artist for this endeavor.

Heck, you can even turn the wicked witch into this:

Now that's inspiration for pinball!

And I'm talking about Kathleen Robertson, not Richard Dreyfuss. Though, I suppose a Richard Dreyfuss pinball machine could be pretty cool too.

Twilight Zone is the highest rated pinball machine of all time. When they made it, the license was over 30 years old. Wizard of Oz is an old theme that could be just as successful. If you don't believe that, then why is the Twilight Zone so popular?

Second, the guy doing this runs and owns Elaut. If he says he's going to make it, it'll happen. Elaut is a very large company that has made games and all kinds of things for decades. Elaut is a much larger company than Stern Pinball is.

Jack was screwed on the LOTR Remakes -

Story was that Jack went round and round with Gary trying to keep pricing low and provide those wanting this game a superior product. Gary cheapen it and demanded money up front to make it and then when final product was finished he charged more and Jack lost with profits on it.

Additionally it was only supposed to be an exclusive for Jack and ended up letting other distributors on it with Jacks upfront money.

You can all go back to RGP and view it there and draw your on conclusions.

I love Stern Pins and own 3 NIB (2 from Jack) but it was a shame that his relationship with Gary got hurt in the LoTR remakes...

If it was not for Jack - Shrek would not have been made since he saw that FGY did not appeal to the family environment.

I believe a good designer and art director can make any theme work. With that said, to play along with your question (and discussing JUST the theme and not gameplay): Twilight Zone the television series has a cult following that's more in tune with what is typically considered a strong pinball theme. Horror/Sci Fi.

Wizard of Oz is a childrens book about dealing with low self esteem. It's heroin is a little girl from an early 1900's dust bowl. That's already a little different from what is the norm for pinball themes. Most people also associate it with the MGM film, which some consider sentimental and corny. Twilight Zone can be mistaken for corny, but it's a different flavor of corny...it's campy. Most audiences can accept and embrace campy (especially horror/sci fi 50's campy), not so much corny.

I'm just playing devil's advocate and nailing down why some people may make beer face at mentioning the theme...if the designer and artist can nail it, cool!

I was critical because I want it to succeed, not because I want it to fail... I think he picked a lame duck of a theme.

LyonsArcade mentioned Twilight Zone being 30 years old, but the age isn't the issue, the theme is. Twilight Zone is a fantastic license. If you want to prove it, mention Twilight Zone to a buddy and watch eyes light up as they try to pick their favorite episode out of 20+ great ones.

Then ask what their favorite part of Wizard Of Oz is, and watch the weird look you get.

It doesn't matter how good the game is if the theme doesn't appeal to 20 to 50 year old men. I just think thats the core market for where these things wind up In The Wild.

Just one heretics opinion. ;)

To each his own, I think it'll be cool. I'm not ashamed to say I like the Wizard of Oz, that was a great fucking movie and I think it's a great license.

Nah, the multiball is going to be "Flying Monkey Multiball" like somebody else mentioned, lol.

Imagine the light show, everything goes black except for a few strobe lights, then green led's light up all over the playfield as the wicked witch flies out across the playfield and appears on the green tinted LCD screen in the background, while you hear the tornado spinning around and her cackling, the shaker motor making the cabinet buzz and shake.....

Ah fuck it, that doesn't sound cool. This isn't a 'sci-fi/horror' movie, that's not scary. This is about a little girl.

God what an epic fail for a first machine.

I disagree. I think they could make this machine pretty badass and I look forward to trying it out. Hell, my wife is a HUGE Wizard of Oz fan... maybe I'll finally be able to get the okay to buy a game NIB. Just need to see the pinball funds come together. :)

Here's hoping for an eventual crossover with Wayne's World on a 3rd table with "Monkeys Might Fly Out of My Multibutt" with the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz.

The fact that he could even secure this license is a huge plus in my book, it means there will be another pinball manufacturer in the USA, this can not be a bad thing!
Jersey Jack sounds to be a pinball for the people by the people kinda guy vs Stern's complacent and even negative additude towards the home market.
