New pin for me! RFM! Got a few questions. OMGWTFBBQ!

Just picked this up today. Been looking for some time.
I have a question about the software version numbers... mine has 1.4. Is it worth the upgrade to 1.5? Also, what's the deal with 1.6, is that bootleg?

No idea on the software updates, congrats on the new pin addition though. Time to sell of some arcade cabs to make more room for pins :p

Well, I wouldn't sell off any classic cabs to make room for a system2000 thats for sure.

1.6 is the last version. It was available as a PUB card update. But you don't need a PUB card to get it... I created a version that works with the Update Manager. I can give you the file.

Matt, you're gonna have to explain this to me. What's a pub card? Seems like 1.5 just added some coin audit features. Can't find anything about what was added with 1.6. Hmmm.

The PUB card is another way to update the software. It's an ISA card that you first plug into a computer and program it with the version you want, then you plug it into the P2K computer and boot it up and it automatically updates the software on the Prism card. If you're an op and you've got a bunch of machines to update then the PUB card makes sense. Not much use to the collector who has one machine. The last software updates (v1.6 for RFM and v1.5 for SWE1) were apparently only released as PUB card updates. But I figured out how to bundle the update files so that they are compatible with the Update Manager (the Windows app that updates the Prism card via the serial interface).

1.6 (and 1.5 for SWE1) do have the final version of the XINA operating system. But besides that, I don't think there's much change from 1.4. If you've got the right computer and the null modem cable then it only takes about 10 minutes to do the update.

then either you havent played this one or you're just plain crazy :D

I'm amazed at all the people on here who are on crack. No, and I mean No self-respecting pinhead likes the turds that are pinball2000. These two games were just awful. I am both a fan of classic vids and pins but the combo of the two totally sucks. Why would vid haters like all of you hold these turds in such high regard? And I have played them and all other pins plenty enough to make my evaluation. You guys who like these blasphemous hybrids, I just don't get what your major malfunction is?

Oh god it looks hideous sitting next to all the NINTY stuff.

Finally, someone who gets it. The nintendo games were so good that putting this sh i t bag next to them just showed off how awful it really is. Damn thing killed the last great pinball manufacturer, now it steals space from more deserving pins/vids.

Actually, Williams was going to kill pinball regardless of Pin2K's performance....the games actually sold quite well and made good money for ops. I'll agree that SWEp.1 is a shit game...but RFM is great....all the video is interactive w/ the ball, thus killing the often-used argument that it's a "hybrid videogame pinball". There are no video modes in RFM - aside from Multiball and Stage intros, all the video is "virtual targets"...it's pure pinball, w/ a holographic twist.

I agree completely. So called pin purists are closed minded and never gave it a chance. The game is outstanding and fun and is absolutely a PINBALL game. RFM is awesome.

Just to toss my own take on this love/hate debate...

Pin2K is great . Period.

My RFM is ALWAYS the most played game at parties. ...by a long shot..!
(.. and my other pins are no slouches either ...(TZ, LOTR, TSPP, Joust,)

RFM is better than SW Ep.1 because it's fun as hell to play,
and has the best humor of any pin I've seen (..even better than MM IMHO ! )

[...although SW EP.1 actually has a deeper ruleset and requires more strategy ]

Pin2K is the most brilliantly designed pin ever. (..."mechanically"-speaking...)
Anyone who's ever had to work on these will tell you what a "joy" it is to work with.
[... easy access to ANY component, great diagnostics tools, etc.. ]

Granted, the shot selection is perhaps a bit limited,
and the game is likely considered "easy" by many,
I still think RFM is a great pin, and is definitely a keeper for me.

/rant off ;-)

OMG! I can connect my pin to the internet and compete with other players for high score around the world!

Has anyone done this????

It's not as easy as it sounds...

You need a very specific type of Ethernet card,
and a very specific type of wireless router (running an obscure
verison of firmware), PLUS v1.8 of the RFM software
(...which is not readily available on-line ) ,
and then there is the whole "card reader" business
to identify yourself on-line.

I know one guy who spent 3-months trying to get this to work,
(...and he even found all the hardware...), but he just gave up out of frustration.

It sounds cool, but it's not trivial...

Let me know if you ever get it done...

Cheers,
Steph

When you sign-up for the tournament they give you the 1.8 software.

You don't need a card reader. It is optional if you have multiple people playing for high score on your machine. Otherwise, all scores are submitted as your scores regardless of who is playing.

I am soooo doing this. I am not discouraged at all. Ebay is my friend for these old parts. :)
