New paper arcade models

On "Cowboy Geoff's" Flickr retro gaming page, I found this picture of an atrocious 720 to Metal Slug conversion...

If you guys are interested in a site that you can host these from...and allow others to download them, I can set up a site on my server if you like. Hell, I will even buy a domain for the site for you if you want.

I could possibly have some of my students (I am a web developer instructor) come up with a design for the site as well...

Let me know...

So I've been folding up Cowboy Geoff's designs, and doctored them up with high-res graphics. Here are the first two models I've redone in that fashion: Dig Dug and Popeye.

I love what Cowboy Geoff has done, but I'm pretty sure there's an error with the Dig Dug design; putting it together, the control panel is uneven, and the bezel/monitor area is actually having to bend backwards a bit in order for the control panel and marquee to line up. I think extra tabs are needed for the control panel, and I'm also fairly certain that the yellow underside of the control panel may be about a 1/16 of an inch too long. I'm going to take a closer look at this one today and see if I can't make it easier to assemble.

I'm currently fixing up his Contra design, and... I dunno. He has the model set on a plain white cabinet, and I know that's not right. Every Contra cab I've seen has been either the Frogger woodgrain or plain black. In the Contra flyer, the cabinet uses a camouflage design... but that's obviously not the final machine in the flyer, since it lacks side art. I'm thinking of reproducing that camo design for the Contra model, and also offering the woodgrain and black variations. Is there a specific dedicated design for Contra cabs that I'm missing? Tell me what you think.

Phoenix is measured and getting ready to assemble. Mappy is coming soon. Thanks to all for the great feedback!

All of the contra's I have ever seen in the wild were in all white cabinets and I have seen allot of them, the sideart has the wo guys holding guns in the jungle rambo style .

Here is another one with gay pinstripes on it

Oh! I didn't realize that Contra was in a white cab as well.

Well, at any rate, here are the three variations I've done, plus Cowboy Geoff's original in the white cab.

IMO The white looks best out of all, camo second. The wood grain makes it look too early eighties and the black is kind of too black.

Phoenix is up. For some reason, I mismeasured the first time, and never did get it exactly right the second time. It all fits nicely, but the side art isn't positioned as high as it should be. I may come back to this someday.

I hope you like this one. Over the weekend, I'll work on Mappy, and plan out the next few paper arcade models. Thanks for all the feedback!

I am VERY interested in doing this!

Have you guys seen this site yet? Peter H. has pics of a cool paper rendition of Time Out Tunnel on his Timeouttunnel.com website. They are someone else's pics that they gave to him, but there are a ton of new models in it. I wish we could get these!

Also, all the Cowboy Geoff pics on flickr are full size if you click on the All Sizes button for each. They are very well done!

My girlfriend is huge into origami. So much so that she bought one of those cri-cuts that is like a plotter but uses a blade instead of ink to cut designs and stuff. I wonder if these could be programmed or downloaded into this thing. It should seeing as how the thing cost her like $400.

Don't get me wrong; I think the Cowboy Geoff models are excellent. What he has is at 72-150 dpi, and I - this is just me speaking - want something at least 300 dpi so that no print quality is lost, especially if you print on card stock (which tends to dull colors). I hope no-one thinks I'm trying to one-up him at his own game; I'm just making hi-res versions for those who want them. Credit for the original models goes to him and him alone. The only two I've made from scratch thus far are Baby Pac-Man and Phoenix.

Measurements are under way for Mappy, and I'm thinking about the next models to follow. I definitely want to make a Q*bert cabinet, but I can't find the dimensions for the original machine anywhere; does anyone have those dimensions?

Sinistar. It's basically the Robotron from Way of the Rodent, but scaled to Sinistar Dimensions (Sinistar slightly thinner).

Tapper. Cup holders were a challenge, but I finally found an elegant solution.
