New Pac-Man record in the news....

Billy probably just sent in a recording of a better game that he had in reserve in the event of such an occurrence...

King of Kong antagonist Billy Mitchell

nice how everyone still makes bill out to be the big bad guy.

They are not making him out to be the bad guy. They are referencing him for what he is known for in order to make him more relevent to the masses.

It's like referencing Paris Hilton as the star of "The Simple Life" instead of calling her Richard Hilton's daughter. If they referenced Billy Mitchell's obscure hot sauce fewer people would have any idea who they are talking about...

Pac-man record

I really like this!!! I'm glad too see another Record go down that most people said would never be broken!

Is there going too be a Movie now?

Time was never an element of game play in Pac-Man and should not be part of a "record".

The record is the perfect score and since Billy achieved it first his record can never be broken, only equaled. Getting there faster doesn't mean anything.

Doing the perfect game in a faster time indicates a more efficient method. All else being equal, greater efficiency indicates greater skill. It doesn't matter that time is not a gameplay element in Pac-Man. People who are interested in human achievements tend to be interested in time, and that's all that matters.

As a general rule, the more time you are allowed to accomplish X, the easier it is to accomplish. So someone who accomplishes X in less time has performed a more difficult task. The more difficult the task, the more impressive the accomplishment.

From my perspective, I care more about who did something best than who did something first. In the case of Pac-Man, David Race is the best known player.

For the record, of the 6 people with perfect Pac-Man games on Twin Galaxies, Billy Mitchell's is the slowest; and not by just a few seconds or even a few minutes; but by nearly two hours; making him the worst of the best.

Also, Mitchell was only first by a matter of 28 days, and the person who did it 28 days later did it about an hour and a half faster.

Who cares who does it fastest? Hell, I come quicker than anyone but that doesn't make me the best at fucking.:D

All joking aside, there is no better than the 3.3 million score, so regardless of who does it faster, it doesn't matter. Especially with a lame ass game that allows for patterns.

*yawn*

It matters in the sense that there is specifically a category on Twin Galaxies for:

Pac-Man
Variation: Fastest Completion [Perfect Game]

And Billy Mitchell is dead last.

Other than learning the patterns in Pac-Man, the key to a perfect game is grouping techniques, and that is what adds so much time to a game that could be completed far quicker if a perfect score wasn't part of the goal. Mitchell obviously takes his sweet time when grouping, making certain that he has the ghosts properly grouped before taking the plunge, maybe even double and triple checking. That means what he did was easier, because he allowed himself all the time in the world to lessen the chances of a hasty error.

Chris Ayra and David Race on the other hand, clearly had better grouping techniques and were more certain of themselves; to the tune of besting Mitchell's completion time by nearly two hours. They demonstrated a higher skill level than Mitchell did. Higher skill level = more impressive, no matter how you slice it.

far be it from me to defend Billy Mitchell who I think is an ass but, do we know if Billy's fastest time is from the perfect game years ago when he was the first and only one to have done this? If so it's hard to judge his time realistically since according to reports he would leave his man in a safe spot, stop playing and do interviews while he was in the process of getting that score. So the real game play time might be a lot quicker than what was recorded. If his fastest time score was a different game then yes he sucks!

Ok, im not one who likes to see a lot or any swearing in a public forum. BUT THAT IS FUNNY!

The verification method for Mitchell's score is listed as "video", so I'm guessing it wasn't a public performance (anyone who knows more about it, correct me if I'm wrong). Public performances are generally listed as "referee" for the verification method (or "referee/video" if it was also taped). Also, Donald Hayes' perfect Pac-Man time was in the same time range as Mitchell's (~5 minutes faster), and also listed as video for the verification method, which indicates to me that Mitchell's time is a time that one might expect from certain methods of playing the game.

It was done at Funspot, and he was doing interviews DURING the game from everything I have seen/read/heard.

I found a reference for that, so you are right. I doubt he did two hours' worth of interviews during the game though. Also, I wonder if his pause time was subtracted when his time of completion was calculated; because I've found several articles on the subject, including a Wikipedia article, that all say it took him about 6 hours. However, his completion time listed on Twin Galaxies is exactly 5 hours and 30 minutes.
