New Nintendo console. better than ps3 & 360..?

WHUT? Cruis'n USA? Ah, you did include an arcade port, and a horrible one at that.
I tried Perfect Dark but the framerate was so bad I couldn't even play it. There's a few good games there, but overall the N64 was not a good system, with a limited amount of excellent games. Probably the worst nintendo console, not including portable systems. Out of about 30 games you listed there probably 25 of them are either sequels, remakes or rehashed.

Yah I realized that after I posted that I had included Curis'n and KI Gold. Still I stand by my assertion that the N64 had good games, and really when each game cost $79.99 new how many could you afford? :D

4 player BattleTanx was the shit on N64. I don't know how many hours I spent playing that game with roommates during college.

I agree for the most part, but there were plenty of good and excellent games for th N64, I just took a look at the full list and picked out the ones I think are good:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_64_games

  1. 1080° Snowboarding
  2. Cruis'n USA
  3. Donkey Kong 64
  4. F-Zero X
  5. GoldenEye 007
  6. Harvest Moon 64
  7. Jet Force Gemini
  8. Killer Instinct Gold
  9. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
  10. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  11. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  12. Mario Golf
  13. Mario Kart 64
  14. Mario Party
  15. Mario Party 2
  16. Mario Party 3
  17. Paper Mario
  18. Perfect Dark
  19. Pilotwings 64
  20. Pokémon Snap
  21. Pokémon Stadium
  22. Pokémon Stadium 2
  23. Shadowgate 64: Trials of the Four Towers
  24. Star Fox 64
  25. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
  26. Super Mario 64
  27. Super Smash Bros.
  28. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
  29. Wave Race 64
  30. Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey
  31. Yoshi's Story

That is 31 titles, and I am sure I missed a few, and I was being very selective. Blast Corps is a good game, but I didn't include it. Also I didn't include ports of arcade and PC games etc.

WHAT

that game is a steaming pile of crap  Replace that with Turok 2 and the list is better...

Mario Kart 64 was enough reason for anyone to have an N64. Even if that was the only game that stayed in the slot, it's all good.

I don't care what anyone else says, the N64 was a good Mario Kart machine.

I have Diddy Kong racing, that game is almost unplayable. It's got a ton of slowdown and framerate issues, it looks like crap. I guess Mario Kart is different?

I never cared for Diddy Kong Racing so much. The idea of multiple forms of travel was decent, but the game really wasn't very good. Mario Kart 64 has its problems as well, but I'm still convinced that I've had more hours of multiplayer good times in that game than any other, ever.

In my opinion, the controls were good, the graphics were good (aside from the flat character models), the tracks were classic, and having four players was simply a blast. I don't recall slowdown being an issue except on DK's Jungle Parkway where part of the track is trowing a bunch of crap at you.

I suppose to play it now for the first time would make it seem very lackluster, though.

We played a bunch of Diddy Kong Racing. The running house joke was that the DNF for last place stood for Dudley No Finish, since he always finished last.

The rumors about the next Nintendo systems always seem to be overstated. If they can pull off a system that puts the other two to shame, I can't imagine I won't get one. With that kind of power, the developers will do what they want with it, and the fact that Nintendo's name is on it, won't matter that much. This is especially true now that N seems to have adopted a corporate system for labeling mature rated games.

Of course, I also heard rumors that the 3DS would have graphics rivaling the current console systems as well, and that certainly doesn't seem to be the case.

I saw that one person mentioned something that I have felt for quite a while myself. At what point is "enough enough"? The PSX was a pretty good match to the display capabilities of most households at the time, and I think that is what helped it be one of the longest running systems. Now that we have systems which can take good advantage of full-HD sets, how much more will the masses demand? How much do you demand?

The next systems from the other two players will invariably out-do whatever Nintendo launches this (or next year). When that happens will probably be decided solely by the specs of N's next system. If N doesn't decisively trounce the other two, it could have a hard time getting a foothold in the market before the other two release theirs. And the other two will have the advantage of knowing what they are competing against.

How about something that isn't a generation, or TWO behind? The Gamecube was 480p capable, when the Xbox could do 720p/1080i(Albeit most games didn't).
The Wii comes out, and the damn thing STILL can only do 480p...and HD sets are well into being standard fare in peoples homes...

1080p capable sets are now "Standard Fare", you buy a new TV now and I don't see any NOT supporting it at this point unless they're small TVs.
If Nintendo's next console is still stuck at 480p, I won't touch it with a 10 foot pole. If it can't do 1080p, I'll simply be disappointed.

I'm not a graphics whore, but there's a noticeable difference between 480p and 720p, especially when you're playing on a 50"+ screen.

they said the new console is better than the consoles out now, so theres no way its 480p. I never once heard anything about the 3ds rivaling the newer consoles?? I heard resident evil was supposed to look as good as 4 did on gamecube but never anything more than that.

And they announced this is gonna be the next wii, so its probably gonna rely on motion controls and not for nothing I dont see this being a console for the hardcore gamers they mentioned they wanted? The wiis motion is great and all but how much further can they take it??

Yeah I keep seeing those controller mockups, they better subsidize them...cause I'm already disgusted with paying almost $80 for a Remote+Nunchuk for the Wii(I bought 3rd party ones off DealExtreme for this reason).

If those are real, they're going to cost a fortune to buy extras.

I don't think Nintendo is crazy enough to try a stunt like that, but even if it is marginally better than the other two players, will it still find a foothold by virtue of it being "good enough" for the common displays of today (1080p) if it can fully support them well?

I think for a lot of folks, the 360 and PS3 are doing a pretty good job at being "good enough", so I have to wonder if the masses will be able to drive the demand for something much more capable (and expensive, in this economy.) And if that's true, N's next machine may not have to be that much higher powered, if it truly is, than the other two if the price is right. So I was wondering how many folks reading this thread feel that way, with the understanding that we may not represent the views of the average consumer.

I think that will depend on what Nintendo allows those same developers to put on their system. They've come a long way, what with releasing games like HotD Overkill and Manhunt on the Wii, but if they still shy away from some of the other hit titles out there, "competitive" graphics power may still not mean much (some people have to have their uncensored gore and boobies, you know :p).

I couldn't agree with you more on this note. I was a HUGE Wii fan back in 2006 and 2007 (As many will remember) but that was before I had an HD TV. I ended up with a 360 at some point in all that and because of that, I ended up getting a 46" LCD. Let me tell you - what looked GREAT on my old 32" CRT looked like ASS On my new LCD. I still can't hardly play Wii games anymore on that TV. When we finally more again this year, I plan to setup the Wii on that old CRT again, probably in the bed room. At that point, it might get some play again.

No kidding - both of those system still seem to do pretty well - especially the 360 considering its age at this point. I would be perfectly fine sticking with them both for another several years unless there's some huge leap in technology coming. Sure there's the 3D thing, but I doubt I'll make that leap anytime soon.

I think this group here is a fair balance overall - we have some who are younger and more hardcore graphics/power freaks, we have some very casual players, and we have the older (sorry, but it's true!) "stuck-in-the-classics" guys.

Personally, I don't have a preference one way or another anymore. I've never cared for graphics as a primary reason to buy anything, ever - but as I mentioned above, these newer TVs make old stuff looks like shit. I can't even play my DC or PS2 anymore without being disgusted, and that's with VGA and component hookups, respectively.

But for me, if there is enough reason (my own reason!) to buy a system, I'll buy it. In this generation, I had the Wii first, then a 360 a couple of year later, and then finally a PS3 about a year ago. Each have their ups and downs (and Sony has shown a major down here recently...) and I can't say I like any one better than the other two.

If I had to pick, I'd have to admit that I think Microsoft has done the best, implementation wise, without a doubt offering the best services to the general gamer. The PS3 may be more of a power house overall, but the 360 is more well rounded. The Wii sort of stands alone, but there will always be those first party titles you won't get anywhere else, and quite honestly, Nintendo will always have that - and they know it - which will keep us coming back.

I find it kinda ironic that Nintendo sold the wii on the premise that graphics don't matter, and now are trying to rush into the next cycle with a graphical leap on the other two.. personally the only games I've really touched in a while were poker and Call of Duty, the 360 handles them fine.

If Nintendo wants to hit the hardcore/mainstream market they'll need at least a great non-motion controller, Grand Theft Auto and non-gimped Call of Duty to start

No matter what the new Wii is I will buy it. I buy all the consoles. I'm one of the sheeple like that. Would that make me a sherson?

Anyway

I wonder if Microsoft is going to talk more about the new console at E3. There was a little bit about it in X360 magazine #71. With the new Nintendo console and the PSN issue, the time may be just right.

Both MS and Sony want to extend this lifecycle as long as possible, and with the Kinect doing as well as it has, I suspect any new MS console would be a year or more after the new Nintendo console. If the pace of the console generations doesn't slow down a bit, everyone is going to get killed trying to keep up.
