New monitor VS original monitor, what camp are you in ?

Are you one of those people that hate screen burn and have to have a new monitor or would you rather have the screen burn and keep the original monitor in your game ? Personally, some screen burn doesn't bother me if it's from the game that the monitor is in. I would probably be bothered by burn in from another game. That said, I am surprised how many people are willing to spend the money just to get rid of some screen burn. I would rather just rebuild the original and use it.

A little burn doesn't bother me. Those are rebuilt when necessary. If it has bad burn, then it is time to look for a tube swap possibility, then new. Bad burn just has to go.

yea i dont mind a little burn either as long as its not verry nociable when the screen is on and the monitor has a good picture i could care less got 2 sitting here now that have great picture but have some burn waiting to be installed into the next macine i get that needs one

it is sweet to have a new one tho but who the hell can afford a new monitor for every machine they have and what a nightamer it is to locate a good new monitor now

You can still do both... :cool2: I just bought some replacement tubes for my G07's. That way I get the chassis I want to keep and to get rid of nasty burn on two of my games.

I'd love to know what is involved in tube replacement, both from the standpoint of actually finding a tube, and from the standpoint of what actually has to be done to swap.

But personally a little bit of burn, from the game the monitor is in, doesn't bother me. If it was from a different game it would bug the heck out of me.

I cheated in that I ordered known compatible tubes instead of hunting for a TV donor. You basically have to unmount the old tube, swap the purity rings, yoke, an wedges to the new tube (for what I am doing), and mount the new tube. Marketing where things were for comparison between tubes saves a bunch of trouble.

If your swapping a tube from a TV that has a yoke, you can check to see if the impedance matches on the two yoke coils. If they do, you can leave the parts on the new tube and just make sure you wire the yoke correctly to the existing chassis. There are plenty of tutorials if you do a google search. Some of the guys on here can do them really fast.... So it isn't a big deal. Just make sure you get the electronics right and have a compatible tube.

BTW - Crystal Castles burn doesn't look good on a Joust. ;)

i'd typically rebuild the old one, unless it has severe burn. the g07 in my satan's hollow has burn so bad i could play with the game off, but i think i'm gonna deal with it and just go with a bob roberts super kit.

I don't mind a little screen burn, especially if it is for the same game. However, nothing looks as good as a brand new monitor.

I did replace this one in my pac-man restore:

I picked up a few new monitors right before Happ ran out of them. I may use them in some of my games temporarily. If I find cabs without monitors, I'll move them over and put the originals back.

Here are the two burned tubes I am replacing... The pac-man is bad, but the tinted plexiglass hides most of it. These will still be good for a bench monitor or a game that doesn't have one...

Hate burn. Can handle a little. If there is alot of burn I will try to find a new tube. If I cant find one, I will prob find a new monitor.

I'm with you on this, but largely because I'm cheap, and also because I don't trust that a new monitor will be as easily repaired. I've had nice new $300 monitors before that broke soon and I couldn't get them repaired. Kinda scared me off from buying new ones.

I have a couple of games with massive burn of the game they are in, but it doesn't bother me too much as long as the picture is good. Different game burn, well that's highly annoying. "Light" burn of the same game, no problem in my book...

My ninja gaiden has heavey burn I wish I could afford to buy a new monitor but it would cost almost as much as the game. Whats the alternative now that Happ is not stocking monitors?

I would say I preffer new but..... at the cost of upgrading each of my games I say a little bit of burn isnt that annoying but really nothing beats minty fresh.

I've always replaced my monitors with or without burn-in. I've done cap kits on quite a few monitors and I was never happy with the results, so I would end up just throwing in a new monitor. There is nothing like the look of a nice fresh new monitor.

Quite a few years ago there was a really good sale on Wells 19" at Wico. I think they were down to something like $139. I bought about 14 of them and replaced many of the ugly ones in my games. I think I only have like 2 or 3 of those left now.

Have you had problems with any of those new monitors, or have they all worked 100%?
