Hello all
I own a 1992 midway nba jam arcade unit

My question to whom ever can offer me some advice is upgrading the monitor…
I want to upgrade to a LCD screen if possible but would that effect the value and the collector experience on the machine

If not then any suggestions as to what to switch the old tube too ?

Yes, it would affect the value and many collectors would not be interested in it with an LCD screen.

What is so wrong with the old monitor that it can't be repaired? There are many resources to repair that monitor if you're not interested in doing it yourself.

I would consider putting an lcd in for a short period of time to keep the game playable while the original gets worked on, rejuved, rebuilt, etc.

But the original monitor in that game is definitely the better choice.

There are a few sit down driving games where an LCD is not all that bad of an option. But 90%+ of games that came with a CRT are better with a CRT.

I'll add my voice to the chorus: Repair what's there.

Even if the tube is totally shot -- which is unlikely -- it's very possible to swap in another CRT monitor without spending a fortune. When properly serviced, a good CRT will last a very long time in home use.

I thank all that have commented, I grew up playing in the arcade and to me my favourite thrill was to beat my friends to the game so that I had the sweet spot.. the spot that did not throw off the glare from the sun lol
Not every arcade machine was In a dark room

The reason of me asking simply was I noticed a so called burn spot starting on the screen
And people in my ear to put lcd
Again deep down I say no but I had to ask the community and find the census

It's odd that you'd cause screen burn in a home use environment unless you're leaving it on for very long periods of time.

Maybe take a picture of what you're seeing and post it here?

I'm old enough to remember seeing threads here where people are like "my monitor's washed out!" and it's because they thought jacking up the screen brightness would overcome their poor electron gun output. they're entirely different components of a CRT.

people also just don't know how to adjust brightness properly and run it high. that's what promotes screen burn.

if you're a novice collector and think people are going to shame you because your game has screen burn, get over it. you'll more than likely get street cred for just having NBA Jam. stop scalping TVs for tube swaps for this. I'm not impressed by your ability to do a tube swap. you know what would impress me? if you learned all the other elements to maintaining your game. if you're unwilling to learn then buy the NBA Jam Arcade1Up. you won't get cool points from me, but your casual players probably won't care.

This is an old chestnut, so do some searching. This has been discussed to death; Read the stickies:

TLDR:

Post some pics of the monitor itself. It's likely a common monitor and can be easily fixed. If you're totally uncomfortable with electronics repair, we have many members who do monitor repair you can send it to.
