I'm in the process of clearing my garage out. I can walk(on the floor) in a good portion of it now!!

I just gave (very cheaply) an electrician all my porcelain sockets (and many other items)
Of course once its gone I think of uses for it. I know many people put new florescent lights in every game they restore, but do others like to keep the original porcelain sockets?

The electrician said if I ever needed anything just ask and he would give me it, since I gave him boxes and boxes of stuff. But would rather ask right away than in a few years.
Should I get a few sockets back for future games or just put in a new light and not worry about it?

Thanks

EDIT: Yes many come with florescent lights, but for those that had porcelain sockets like midway and others (my particle board DKJ), do most people switch to florescent lights? I personally think they light it up better than one bulb in the middle, but don't want to ruin a restore by changing something people might consider essential.

The majority of my games have come with florescent lights... the exceptions being Midway Pac/Galaxian cabs and if I remember right, my Data East "rounded marquee" cab had standard light bulb sockets (one on each side), which I populated with CFLs anyway.

Porcelain sockets are extremely cheap at any hardware store, hell even Wal-Mart has them. Id personally rather spend a few bucks and avoid the indian giving. I know he offered, but still.

My personal opinion. fluorescents = look better, even lighting, less heat, last longer = better

If people are gonna bitch about a $1.50 light socket then they have other issues to deal with :)

I'd say you're better off buying new ones when you need them. Like gregtron said, they are only $1.50 a pop, and in the mean time you've got one less thing cluttering up the garage.

Take it from a guy who has too much stuff cluttering up the garage, the basement, the bedroom, etc, etc - don't hang on to parts that are easily available. Save the room for stuff you can't get in the bargin bin at home depot.

if you're really that worried about authenticity then put a standard socket back in and put a CFL in it; you'll have the look of a flourescent with the "original" hardward.

personally, i like to change mine out to 18" fixtures because they light brightly and evenly. i think i pay about $9 for a complete unit with the lamp at HD or Lowe's.
