I have been testing a future product for www.Arcadeshop.com that is really handy. It is a replacement switching power supply like the others they sell but for Gottlieb machines. I have tested it in Q*Bert,Reactor, and Mad Planets so far and it works great. The knocker works in Q*Bert and I have also tested it with both Clay and Dave's multi Q*bert kits installed. This would also work in some Gottlieb pinball machines.

It uses a lower profile higher rated switcher as you can see Above.

I mounted this (Q/D) on the Reactor backdoor in the same space the original board was placed and it would clear the monitor fine. No space or wire length issues.

This will also be a valuable tool anytime I pickup a Gottlieb game. I can just plug this in and move on to other problems the machine may have knowing I have a reliable power source to work with.
He does not have these in stock at this time nor do I have a price point for them as I am only testing this one. I am sure they will be available soon.

I have been wanting this product for years. They need this to be available before CAX. It looks very likely I will be bringing my qbert and I would be much happier with it running this PS than the poorly designed original that runs so hot you could cook food inside the cab.

Email them and see if it will be ready before CAX. If not maybe you can borrow this one.

If and when this does become available, please also let me know for sure. I, too, have been wanting one of these for my Mad Planets for ages!

I had to do some significant and repeated maintenance on the original PS and it seems to work OK now (no problems for a couple of years including a couple of trips to CAX), but I'd still prefer to get a switcher in there for greater reliability.

The machine will be going to CAX again this year, so if it becomes available before the show dates, that would be great!

Again, let me know via PM! :)

I'll probably spring for two of these, one to keep as a backup for my Krull when/if it ever dies and one for my Mad Planets, which currently runs off of two power supplies, the original with +5V burned out and a switcher to provide the +5v. (Switcher doesn't have one of the 12Vs so it can't take over completely.) The wiring was and still is a bastardized mess but at least it all works correctly now thanks to Oryk Zinyo.

Is the original p/s difficult to repair? Is it a situation where you can use beefier components (huge recifier/heat sinks), etc.. and bulletproof it?

The original PS was simply poorly designed and runs hot as heck. If nothing else I think it's a good idea to replace it to reduce the heat to the other boards. I suspect this will add years of life to these games.

...

I'm confused....So you do have them available for sale right now? 5/12/2010? And have had them available since 2007 or 2008? If not, why is the fact that Riptor DOES have them available trivial?

Signed, cornfused.

I will not have them for sale myself as I do not sell this type of item. The "trivial" and "been on my site for years" are just quotes of an inside joke between a few old collectors and producers of these types of items.

This was given to me by www.arcadeshop.com for testing. I think around 4 units are being tested right now to make sure no problems come up (which they have not). Once that is done they will go into full production. I have heard a price point of around $60 for the unit with the low profile power supply. This is a drop-in replacement with no mods or wiring changes and will mount in the original space the PS board used. This unit will run much cooler and more reliably than the original PS and will not destroy the audio amp and other portions of the gameboards if it does fail(unlike the original ps board as we all know).

I have them but not listed for sale. I had made a couple wiring harness for them and sold a couple a while back that were plug and play in a qbert. Basically the same thing they are doing with the pcb, I just made a short harness to connect it to the original harness.
Since these will be available soon I probably wont bother making any more harness for them and just sell the PS that I have left by themselves. FYI, mine are used switchers that have been recapped, tested working. I think I have about 6 or 7 left (sold two yesterday).

Actually, I sold those a long time ago, before my supply of cheap power supplies with 24V dried up. Same unit I rewired for Dragon's Lair.

Nothing special about the PS... they're used in most ATMs.

The ps is just a Happ Controls. I think it was used mostly for its size/footprint. However it is rated 1a higher on the +12v line also.

In stock this week at AS

These will be in stock by the middle of this week according to AS.

I had to put this one back in my Reactor because something else went south in the original PS (again!). Took 5 mins to swap and my friend (who had never played Reactor before) was playing again. Great product to have around just for that reason alone IMO.
