I have a G07 of unknown origins. I did a full cap kit, HOT, flyback. I power it up. Great picture but I get a light "click" which I track down by turning out the lights.

Every few seconds the core of the flyback is arcing over to metal frame the HOT is mounted to.

Anyone seen this before?

Unfortunately it looks like you might have a bad flyback. I've had new ones that were bad. Sucks.

3 of the last 4 i got from bob were bad or blew in half.

0 of the 10 I've got from riptor have had problems. And they definitely have different labels and anode cups.

Fyi

I was REALLY hoping to hear that I needed to add the cap across D503, add a coil of wire around the exposed core and ground it, or some other nonsense.

I am also not sure where this flyback came from. It was new but has been in my parts bin for a couple of years so I am not sure who I bought it from. If it is the problem, it is the first bad-out-of-the-box flyback I have ever had.

Additionally, the flyback I removed was NOT the original factory unit OR one of the modern replacements either as it lacked the molded bracket and screw hole for support.

You commented that the flyback was new, but from a couple of years ago. There was a known batch of bad flybacks out there, for the g07. One thing's for sure electrical and mechanical parts never fix themselves, they can't heal, so an issue is still there. Was there possible metal shavings of solder remnants that may have caused some arcing?

I ran it for two more hours without a single spark.

The original problem it had was the ferrite core was arcing directly to the chassis frame. It only happened once every few seconds and was very minor... but enough to make a sound and cause a disturbance on the screen. I had to turn out every light to find it.

Other potential issues of note: On this chassis I had replaced the 2sd870 (HOT) with an NTE 89. I have heard those are of dubious quality. The chassis being tested was not screwed down into the frame. Although there was a good earth ground on the frame, the chassis was not solidly mounted. This shouldn't matter as the monitor is isolated. Also, the last chassis tested/troubleshot on that tube was so far over voltage at the anode, it launced a three inch arc from that anode to the aquadag. None of this SHOULD have mattered but it was all out the ordinary.

Of course the simplest explaination is usually the correct one. Between tests (bad then good) I pulled the chassis out and flipped it over. If there was a stray capacitor leg or solder shaving it would have fallen out. Either that or my flyback's is a bad one who's "bomb timer" is about to go off.

I am going to hold onto this chassis and put it in one of my personal games for a while and see how long it lasts. If it can run 48 hours or so without incident, I will assume the problem wasn't the flyback and most likely stray solder shavings or other metal trimmings somewhere....
